Samantha Crain @ 9th Ward

Chocktaw-American singer/songwriter/multi-hyphenate Samantha Crain returns to Buffalo for an intimate basement show on Delaware Ave. Wednesday. Touring in support of their latest length album Gumshoe, their stop at the 9th Ward is at the tail end of a US and Canadian Tour that has been at full throttle since early May. Fans of Waxahatchee, First Aid Kit or Bonnie Prince Billy would be pleased as punch for this one. Opening the show will be indie-folksy Cherokee Nation folk musician Kalyn Fay. It’s $22 at the door.

Root Cellar @ Duende

Last month, Buffalo-based freewheeling experimental jazz project Root Cellar came out with their album Fermentations. In fact, we loved the release so much, we made it our Album of the Week. The largely-improv’d act will be playing at Duende @ Silo City for a happy hour set and it is free (as long as you grab some Carlsbergs from the bar). Fans of Budos Band, Antibalas, or Medeski, Martin, & Wood would be into the band’s imaginative melding of styles and time signatures.

Tom Henry @ Revolver Records (Elmwood)

Chicago-born, LA-based garage-rock indie-psych hybrid Tom Henry will be headlining an underground ripper Friday evening in the heart of the Elmwood Village. Henry is making a tour stop in Buffalo in support of their latest album, Songs to Sing and Dance To, which came out at the tail end of June. The act is currently signed to Royal Oakie Records, which is an independent label based out of Oakland, California. Fans of Ariel Pink, Connan Mockasin, and much of the Burger Records repertoire would be into Tom Henry. Rounding out the bill will be support from sunny Illinois experimental-pop act Alga, local raw rockers T.T.T.T., The Jumpers offshoot Bobfinger, and tunes spun from DJ Matty Mat of Thee Isolators. Could this be one of the most fun underground bills of the summer?
