Liminal Shade – “Disorder (Joy Division Cover)”

As made popular by Joy Division on their seminal 1979 album Unknown Pleasures, Liminal Shade puts their own spin on the joyous themes of alienation and feeling lost. Born from hearing its resurgence on social media, the band wanted to tap into the same themes present now that Ian Curtis et al. dredged up oh so many years ago:

“The themes of ‘Disorder’ resonate profoundly with the current moment… The sense of instability and disquiet that Joy Division captured decades ago resonates with the collective uncertainty many are experiencing these days.”

I will say, the band definitely understood the assignment and took a song older than most of us and not only made it feel fresh but also paid respect to its storied origins.

If you’ve somehow missed out on Joy Divison, you can find the original on Spotify. It’s certainly not required listening before you hear the Liminal Shade version (also on Spotify), but it’s certainly interesting to compare and contrast. If this is up your alley, everything is gonna be okay and don’t listen to Elliot Smith immediately following unless you have a strong constitution. Please do check out Liminal Shade though, you’re in for a good time, even if the world can feel bleak sometimes.
