Mirrorball – “Story of the Ice”

“Story of the Ice” is an apropos name for a track that I’m surprised isn’t about Buffalo (because no one else gets ice and no one ever used ice in the non-literal sense for a song). I’m never going to be mad about another dream pop band to add to my repertoire and Mirrorball is no exception; they pulled me in hook line and sinker with super slick bass licks and the perfect amount of synth (if you look back at some of my previous articles, you’ll see I hate it when synth is misused). Made up of Alexandra Johnstone and Scott Watson, the duo plays around Johnstone’s super soft vocals – managing to throw in a LOT of sound while doing it quietly (if that makes sense).   From what I could tell Johnstone and Watson haven’t put out an album as Mirrorball, but have a smattering of singles[...]

Mirrorball – “Condo Pond”

West Coast haze-pop duo Mirrorball dropped a new track late last week that’s setting the tone right for a carefree four day vacation. “Condo Point” is a dreamy synth driven track reminiscent of a Blondie b-side, or more contemporarily Architecture in Helsinki’s fun, upbeat compositions. The song haze a feel of nostalgia, the vibe of spacing out at your favorite adolescent haunt or activity. Since 2019, the creative partnership consisting of Alexandra Johnstone and Scott Watson has been delighting fans with their consistent bops and garnering airplay from Spotify Fresh Finds and indie radio heavyweight KXLU. Mirrorball – “Red Hot Dust”

LA-based duo Mirrorball are here to lull you into a haze with their latest single, “Red Hot Dust.” Singer/songwriter Alexandra Johnstone and multi-instrumentalist and composer Scott Watson have crafted something stunning here, driven by somber piano plunking and Johnstone’s ghostly vocal presence. Big hooks and morose moodiness will remind you of Lana Del Rey or Beach House with a hint of the rawness of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (indie rock producer Chris Coady, who has also worked with the YYYs and Beach House also produced this track). The hard hitting melodies of lines like “red wine it’s a thriller/ it’s a god damn killer” cut right through you – as they explain it: “[‘Red Hot Dust’ is] a dreamy drive up the foggy, west tree-covered coast before the sun comes up arriving to the pink open desert.” Be sure to add “Red Hot Dust” to your favorite Spotify playlist.
