We’re digging the ethereal vibes of “Fake Girlfriend” from Charleston’s Grace Joyner. This one utilizes gauzy synth textures and a funky, nu-disco bass line as the backbone to Joyner’s haunting vocal delivery. She explores the complexity of a relationship with a “fake girlfriend” – someone who’s there when you need them but not good enough when you don’t. Grace Joyner – “Dreams”

From out the shadows of indie pop comes Miss Joyner, a woman whose dusky voice matches her rather reflective, feminine appearance and demeanor. Grace Joyner and her crew (background vocalist and keyboardist Camille Lucy Rhoden, background vocalist and bassist Dan McCurry, and background vocalist and percussionist Nick Jenkins) are from Charleston, South Carolina, are on label Hearts & Plugs, and released the video “Dreams” from recently released album Maybe Sometimes – in C.  “Dreams” pins a haunting ex against a struggling, lonely druggie desperately trying to forget about his overwhelming love from the past. Grace Joyner – “Real”

Grace Joyner spent several years as a harmony singer for several prominent Nashville-area bands before writing her own material. This turned out to be a good decision. Joyner, like many of us, channeled her hurt into a positive outlet – her music. After finding her muse on an EP, Young Fools, Joyner is back with a debut LP. Joyner’s songs touch on unrequited love, coming to terms with personal failure, and the importance of taking action. “Real” finds Joyner’s lilting vocals riding smoothly on top of synthy indie rock undertones.
