Glom – “Below”

Glom and buffaBLOG go way back (see here, and here, and here, and here). We’re adding to our Glom collection with their latest single, “Below.” While Glom surely knows how to get upbeat and ebullient, “Below” takes a more mid-tempo route made popular by contemporaries like Slow Pulp or Goon. Deep, plucky guitars and charming synth tones pair perfectly with Glom’s simple-but-effective lyrical style. We’ll let Glom take it away with a perfect explanation of how “Below” came to fruition: “To me, ‘Below’ almost materialized out of thin air. I picked up my guitar and tuned it down— lower than I’ve ever tuned it before with this project… Something about the low pluck of the strings brought out the melody and lyrics about me coming to terms with what I thought was expected of me as I grew up. I was 29 and creeping up on the next decade of[...]

Glom – “I Wanted The Real Thing”

We’ve been keeping a close eye on Glom – ICYMI, we’ve previously featured their songs “Fungus,” “Gre[a]y,” and “Again,” because they are genuinely an excellent act. They’re back with yet another banger, this time called “I Wanted The Real Thing.” The Brooklyn alt-rockers sure know how to write a guitar riff – with touches of psychedelia and synth pop and carried by a strong falsetto croon, “Real Thing” fits in perfectly with their technicolor brand of indie rock. They get existential here – here’s a quote from the band explaining their approach: “The line ‘I want to talk with god…’ It speaks to this sense of wanting to figure out, especially right now, what the hell is really going on. Why are things so messed up? Like, who’s the manager here? Who can we talk to to figure things out on a metaphysical level?’ You can also find “I Wanted[...]

Glom – “Gre[a]y”

Brooklyn-based duo Glom are no strangers to buffaBLOG – we’ve previously featured “Fungus” and “Again” because we loved them so much. They’re back with another super-colorful take on indie-rock with the not-so-tellingly named “Gre[a]y.” This song is absolutely loaded with kaleidoscopic textures and a stickily-sweet vocal hook that will keep it embedded in your brain for hours to come. Despite the swirling textures, the band tried their best to keep “Gre[a]y” feeling raw during the recording process; it’s a perfect juxtaposition that we think seriously paid off. Preview “Gre[a]y” on YouTube below, but be sure to add it to your favorite Spotify playlist when you’re done.

Glom – “Again”

Last time we checked in with NYC sextet Glom, we were waxing poetic about their starry-eyed, hook-laden single “Fungus.” They’re back with a new song, this time with the jammy, mid-tempo simmer of “Again.” This one never quite bubbles over the top – it has us grooving along without ever getting our blood boiling. In that way, it’s a refreshing demonstration of how to write a tastefully subdued song… Just make sure you stick around for the fuzzed-out solo. Check out again below – it can also be found on Spotify.

Glom – “Fungus”

Loving this gloomy and gauzy indie rocker from Brooklyn sextet, Glom. “Fungus” is full of starry-eyed synths and downtrodden, guitar-driven vibes; it tackles the awful feelings that make you struggle after being rejected in a relationship or otherwise. We love the dark vibes but, conversely, be sure to stick around for the big chorus – “my friends they all hate me” comes at you with a surprisingly sticky pop hook. Check it out below or on Spotify.
