Conflict at Serenity Pools – “fruit bowl”

“fruit bowl” is the latest from Conflict at Serenity Pools, a band with one of the coolest names out of the ones we’ve covered at the BLOG (and one we’ve covered before here and here). The track itself leans more into techno territory; a slight departure from “Bosun” and its shoegazy bedroom pop, but still capturing the ethereal, pop-adjacent sound. Luke McQueeney keeps it simple here with synth and drum machines, casting a pall with atmospheric sounds that suck you right in. Speaking to the track, he had this to say: “We didn’t stress about one thing, even though we explored our angst and worries and melancholic feelings earlier, through this we we’re soothed— the catharsis of singing felt transcendent. the light was pervasive, calm, and bright on our walk back from the ocean.” You can hear “fruit bowl” below from the band’s YouTube or add it to your Spotify[...]

Conflict at Serenity Pools – “Bosun”

A band we’ve covered previously at the Blog (here), California act Conflict at Serenity Pools (CASP) brings us their latest single “Bosun.” Managing to both have an objectively interesting name and a song title that is the phonetic spelling for a boatswain or “a ship’s officer in charge of equipment and the crew,” is no small feat! The track itself is subdued yet simmering, keeping the vocals and guitar at a whisper while crescendoing sharply but then dialing things back. Luke McQueeney duets with a female vocalist through, using the nautical theme as device for discussing (what I assume) to be the breakdown of a relationship (or maybe not, sometimes I strike out). You’ll enjoy CASP if you find yourself enjoying shoegazy/bedroom pop adjacent artists like Slowdive or My Bloody Valentine. You can check out “Bosun” below from Soundcloud or on Bandcamp or Spotify. If you like what you hear, the[...]

Conflict At Serenity Pools – “Stained Glass Curtain”

Conflict At Serenity Pools calls Venice Beach, California home, but has collaborators that span well beyond Dogtown (read our previously feature here). CASP for short has just released their latest piece, a blurred bite of sumptuous surf citrus flavored indie, “Stained Glass Curtain.” It is their first single off upcoming LP Ladders of Misfortune coming out Sept. 29th. The new song has a care free confidence evocative of The Velvet Underground that lets a pop creativity flow freely into their indie guitar sound.  An undeniable California surf sound brings the bright energy to that carefree tude and buzzy rhythms create a savory hit that you can feel in the back of your jaw as bright guitar lines twinkle dazing you with Beach Boys pop tones. The upcoming album explores collage and time; “Stained Glass Curtain” is lock step with the project’s themes, referencing patchwork both in fabric and in happiness. Let[...]

Conflict at Serenity Pools – “Other Love”

Venice, CA-based act Conflict at Serenity Pools caught our ears with the noisy goodness of their latest single, “Other Love.” Featuring elements of shoegaze, kraut, and straight-up noise (with a healthy dose of DIY production value), “Other Love” sounds like the meandering creations of your local, loud-as-hell shoegazers ripping a phat set in the basement venue next door. This one is truly one-of-a-kind – though there are elements of traditional indie rock throughout, upon first listen, you’re sure to discover something you’ve never quite heard before. Lyrically, CASP explains: “Content and inspiration centers around isolation, self-review in isolation, contemplation, and the yearning for touch and tactile reality.” You can also find “Other Love” on Spotify.
