B. Miles – “Emergency Contact”

New York based Brenna Miles, better known as B. Miles, brings us her latest pop gem with “Emergency Contact,” and even after being done listening it’s still stuck in my head. You’ll hear a lot of drum machine and whispers of bass guitar but the focus is undoubtedly on Miles’ vocals; her range isn’t tested too much but every note is flawless. We’ve written about B. Miles before here, and love what she’s doing now just as much as a year ago! Fans of St. Vincent or Sharon Von Etten would find a lot to enjoy here, as well as someone looking to expand their horizons from the usual male lead act. Speaking to the track, Miles had this to say: “I moved across the country from my family many years ago and depended on my significant other during my 20s to be my emergency contact. When we split up[...]

B. Miles – “Backseat Lover”

B. Miles is thrilled to bring you her new full-length release backed with a full band. Titled Different Pages, it marks a watershed moment for the singer/songwriter, with songs filled with self-revelations and piercing perceptions (find our previous features on B.Miles’ release Here and Here). To celebrate the LP’s release, Miles bring us her second single from the album, the vulnerable and delicate indie-pop cut “Backseat Lover.” The new song puts Miles’ deeply emotional experiences on display with intimate lyrics that evoke a romance facing a unspoken schism, ever widening, while simultaneously being incomparably close to that person as they slowly fade into shadow. Miles’ vocals are hypnotizing as they rise and fall creating the same spiraling effect that her thoughts do while she lies awake next to her love. She spills out the lyrics with breathy intimacy, “That these pillow thoughts keep turning in my mind” even imagining the[...]

B. Miles – “Different Pages”

B. Miles has her sophomore album coming out on September 30th and leading the way is the title track, “Different Pages.” An alt pop hit dripping with allure, “Pages” channels 90’s alternative pop masterpieces from Miles’ past that helped her grapple with her current life-changing events (check our previous feature on B. Miles here). Miles found inspiration in her favorite playlist stored on her first iPod, the bygone cultural touchstone that so many readers can close their eyes and wistfully reminiscence how formative it was to them. Miles finds herself at the end of a relationship and worldview that she carried through the entirety of her 20s – the break up anthems of the 90’s hibernating on her iPod manifest in a lingering pang and cathartic release like no other. Miles taps into the powerful, emotionally intelligent 90’s stars like Natalie Imbruglia, Dolores O’Riordan, and Hope Sandoval using them as[...]

B. Miles – “The Year I Felt Cool”

New York based B. Miles brings us this smooth ditty of a single that exudes more than it’s fair share of swagger, as B.Miles takes us on a glitzy indie pop romp through what is clearly HER CITY. You’ll find yourself bopping along as you’re lulled in by her hypnotic voice and steady stream of consciousness lyrics, only to come to at the end wondering when you’ll get to walk with B.Miles again. I’m not exactly sure which year she felt cool, but if this or any of her other songs are any indication… it’s probably every year, now, and in the future. You can hear this and other tracks on her Spotify, or, live at the Bowery Ballroom March 17th in Manhattan.
