Liking this rocker from Ontario trio Basic White – “Brigade” is a tasteful blend of classic rock hooks and modern indie rock sensibilities. Singer Riley White (see what they did there?) is an eclectic vocalist, pushing his bluesy grit to yelps, but only when it makes perfect sense. Beyond that – the video for “Brigade” was shot in a mansion and features some murderous metaphors. Pretty cool stuff – check it out below.
Loving this latest jam from Aaron Zachary called “Bullfight!” This one feels simultaneously fuzzed-out and jangly, propelled by a deeply groovy drum beat, but also obviously driven by Aaron’s unique vocal timbre. This one is certainly 90s tinged with just enough eclectic 2020 flavor to keep it feeling fresh and interesting. LA-based ellie d. just put out a late-summer jam that has us feeling nostalgic in all the right ways. “Bedtime” starts off unassuming enough – a smooth electropop jam that shows off ellie’s penchant for introspective lyrics. It soon evolves into a nu-disco tinged chorus with a flashy bass line and flourishes of sparkly synths. Austria’s Comfort Kiss is the solo moniker for guitarist Martin Wührer, perhaps initially known from the band Like Elephants. We’re digging his latest output, “Silence,” the title track from his debut EP. This one is a dreamy, shoegazy jam with a decidedly bedroom DIY vibe. Full of chimey synths, swirly jangle guitars, and mysterious far-off vocals, this one would fit comfortably on the shelf next to any Slowdive or Pains of Being Pure At Heart album. Jack Binkerd is an Alabaman-turned-Nashvillian making alt-country tinged indie rock with a cool, mathy flair. It’s a lot to take in on paper, but we think listening to the start-stop angularity of “Magnolia” will speak for itself. In “Magnolia,” Binkerd combines unique guitar riffing (reminiscent of Minus the Bear) with the sincere emotion that you might hear out of a Pinegrove song. Can’t get enough of “Parrot,” the latest jam from Belgian singer/songwriter Nicolas Michaux. With a sound that brings to mind early !!! or Metronomy, “Parrot” is a super tight indie rocker with hints of nu-disco flavor. Here’s another darktronica banger from prolific Buffalo-based producer Medusa. “Woof” is a grungy, genre-bending slog that beautifully aligns with their m.o.: [Medusa has] pledged their life to composing anthems of the scorned. Like the infamous gorgon, Medusa is all about avenging wrongs and turning you to stone – but, like, in a fun way. It’s revenge pop. “Woof” absolutely feels like a revenge jam – especially the recurring refrain of “I’m that b*tch.” Noisy, angry, and menacing, this one is sure to pump some adrenaline into your veins. We’ve been lovin’ on this twinkly indie rocker from LA duo rincs. “Bobcat II” is a quirky jam, full of spindly twists and turns, unique chord progressions, and a super tight percussion track. This one is ambiguous genre-wise, layered subtly with lots of electronic elements and carried heavily by a buttery vocal track; we especially dig when the bass kicks in the 2nd verse, around the 1:05 mark. Loving this super chill ambiance from Italian chillwave act My Gravity Girls. “Forests” is a super simple song; a two-chord jam that could be the soundtrack to a nightly jaunt through a forest. This one is ultra-soothing with a hint of mysteriousness, as perfect for a night drive as it is for winding down at the end of a long day. Ithaca/LA hyrbid trio Jimkata are back (finally!) with an epic synthpop jam called “Wanna Go.” Hot off the heels of a two and a half year hiatus, the synth-soaked trio popped back up with “Wanna” and it’s accompanying music video treatment, utilizing an infinite-frame shtick with a palette of vibrant-yellows. Loving this spooky one from Indiana solo-act Error Jordan. “Spook’d Ya” deals with ghostly presences, future hauntings, and empty-minded musings – but more than that, it has that somber, barely-held-together quality of other rickety indie rockers like Attic Abasement, Cursive, or Modest Mouse.
