Hundred Plus Club – “Get Away From Me Jack”

The Hundred Plus Boys are at it again. Fresh off a sweet streaming success in their previous single “Gobsmacked,” Buffalo’s post-punk outfit drops their follow-up “Get Away from Me Jack.” HPC’s has featured bright guitars and earworm hooks taking influence from the great acts of 2000s indie rock, but lately things have gotten darker. “Gobsmacked” started down a gothy-er path that’s continued with the rollout of “Get Away from Me Jack.”   On this single, frontman Zain Shirazi’s baritone vocals hide within a heavy bottom half featuring some pounding bass guitar and a drum section that flips between understated live playing and New Order in-your-face “Blue Monday”-styled drum machine, continuing the band’s experimentation with percussive elements. Shirazi’s brooding vocals menacing backing voices compound the feeling of being under a sinister spell, as Zain tries to resist:   “You want people to come to your show … / But I don’t[...]

Hundred Plus Club

Buffalo-based indie rock trio Hundred Plus Club consists of Zain Shirazi (vocals, guitar), Burak Spoth (drums), and Zekeriya Spoth (keys). The three have been friends since middle school, playing together for over ten years, officially donning the Hundred Plus Club moniker in the summer of 2015. Hundred Plus Club is reminiscent of mid 2000s indie rockers such as Tokyo Police Club, Bloc Party, and Interpol.

Hundred Plus Club – “4/19 (Demo)”

Hundred Plus Club recently released a freshened version of their first song ever (!), affectionately titled “4/19 (Demo).” Ostensibly a working title or the file’s original name, the group used a ten-year-old idea of the first music they ever wrote that could be considered a fully fleshed-out tune. The trio kept the original recording of the drum track, a tight, jazzy snare-forward beat from drummer Burak Spoth, while adding mysterious lyrics and spindly guitar from singer/guitarist Zain Shirazi. There’s something special about demos recorded in a “tin can basement,” and it’s a fun little development that HPC had the wherewithal to polish this into a proper release. We’ve embedded a Spotify player below for convenience, but be sure to check out all the different ways to support HPC via this helpful Linktree link.

Hundred Plus Club – “Gobsmacked”

Hundred Plus Club combines intense, often dark, emotions with an upbeat indie rock style that perfectly mixes the negative and positive. It’s an easy-to-get-into sound applicable to life’s many uncertainties and in-betweens. In their earlier discography, the group often drew inspiration from early 2000’s post-punk revival and indie rock groups such as The Strokes, Interpol, or MGMT. Check out our previous posts on the band to learn more. Yet their most recent release, “Gobsmacked,” finds a bit more in common with 80’s alternative and post-punk groups like The Cure or Echo & the Bunnymen. Sticking to the shadows with an edgier sound, Hundred Plus Club evolves their style substantially on “Gobsmacked,” delving deep into a modern and groovy goth rock sound. An 80’s drum machine loop acts as the rhythmic foundation, while lead singer Zain Shirazi’s open-ended lyrics jump off the page: “I see those menacing eyes / I wanna[...]

Hundred Plus Club – Doom and Bloom

Buffalo-based band Hundred Plus Club (HPC) stays on par with their poppy, story-driven music in their latest three-song EP, Doom and Bloom. The band teamed up with Admirable Traits Records yet again to record this project which joins the ranks alongside a number of excellent singles, EPs like 2016’s For You and 2017’s Everybody’s Friend, and a split with their fellow Buffalonians in Cooler.  The opening track and lead single “Garden Cruise” dives into the problems of love (in whatever form it may take) – within the first few lines lead singer Zain Shirazi exclaims, “Love makes, Love makes us cry.” He sings with such a cold and calculated pain that if you close your eyes and imagine yourself alone at night, you’d feel like you can run through a brick wall head on. Essentially, that is the picture that the band tends to draw for their fans; being able[...]

Hundred Plus Club Release Music Video for “Extraterrestrial Dread”

Buffalo indie-alternative act Hundred Plus Club have teamed up with local label Admirable Traits Records again for a new(ish) music video/single. Beyond their catchy indie rock approach, the trio exude charisma and eloquence on camera quite effortlessly. In their latest music video for single, “Extraterrestrial Dread,” Hundred Plus Club take us on a journey with a galactic blue friend who presumably represents dread. Ironically enough, this goofy blue being is the only thing that brings a smile to the band’s faces throughout the entirety of the video. The overall tone of the song provides a calming essence that could be enjoyed in just about any mood, full of chiming guitars, subtle keys, and metronome rhythms. Stream: “Extraterrestrial Dread” here. You can also watch their music video below.

Hundred Plus Club Everybody’s Friend

Everybody’s Friend, the recently released album from Cheektowaga indie rockers Hundred Plus Club, gets going right from the start, with the frenetic opener “Twice the Pride, Double the Fall” bringing forth all the attitude one might expect from a tune about dismissing a relationship on the brink of toxicity, not to mention employment of a thrilling guitar sound similar to something one might hear on a Sleater-Kinney record. Despite its title seeming somewhat silly, the second song in the tracklist, “Grilled Cheese for Stephanie,” changes tones from its predecessor, deceptively acting as an emotional and romantic reveal of fervent feelings for the eponymous girl. “Exit” is a catchy-as-can-be track built upon unrestrained rhythm and a guitar line evocative of surf rock. The ensuing song, the subtle display of confidence “Cooler,” is engaging and soothing, with its guitar line trickling down like raindrops. It reaches an epoch two and a half[...]

Hundred Plus Club Drop Music Video for “Cooler”

Buffalo indie rock act Hundred Plus Club have dropped a new visual for “Cooler,” the latest single off their upcoming EP Everybody’s Friend, a video that manages to capture the band’s true lo-fi essence. Nestled between a giant projection screen and projector, the band churns out their latest indie rock entry as a myriad of hazy colors, including plenty of blues and reds, and shapes dance across their faces. Angular guitars and cymbal crashes swell and build to a satisfying crescendo as the video fades out with the band’s name and song title flashed across the screen in a familial 80’s graphic font. The new clip was shot by James Carriero, directed by drummer Burak Spoth and co-directed by singer Zain Shirazi. Everybody’s Friend, Hundred Plus Club’s sophomore EP and first since 2016’s For You, will be released November 24 via Admirable Traits Records. In honor of the album’s release,[...]

Hundred Plus Club For You

Hundred Plus Club is an impressive group that shred something similar to Tokyo Police Club and Dinosaur Bones. For You, their newest six-song effort, is a glorious scientific approach to solid indie rock that will make you want to see them live. The first track, “Reversed” starts off with post-punk distorted guitar chords. Then, the whole band kicks in  with deliberate fashion – the song is very urgent despite sufficient reverb. “But I never know what you’re think of, what you’re thinking on,” tells the sad story of relatable anxiety. The verses are stuffed with full-sounding guitar chord strums. The chorus’ guitars bounce excitingly between the phones. There’s one last flourish before the song ends as timely as it began. “Entropy” is more bass-y than the first song – a lush electric bassline pulls the listener in. These boys remain just as urgent. The middled guitar manages your interest in[...]

Tonight: Hundred Plus Club

Mohawk Place is set to host a sleepy Sunday show this evening, headlined by touring indie power-pop musician, Sam Vicari,  but the band that has really caught out eye is Buffalo-based quartet, Hundred Plus Club, who will be on support. Hundred Plus Club’s got a sound like Tokyo Police Club: matter-of-fact drums, near spoken singing, and exciting, colorful riffs on both the bass and electric guitars. The band recently released an EP recorded at World of Noise sSudios titled Three Songs.. The brief three song snapshot of the band’s repertoire are all equally upbeat, despite some dwelling lyrics. New listeners will appreciate the dance-and-sway vibes of Hundred Plus Club. Also on the bill are Small Smalls and Andrew Kothen. Doors at  8pm with a $5 cover.

Hundred Plus Club Releases Debut EP

Local garage rockers Hundred Plus Club have just released their debut three-song EP, full of frantic, dance rock. This fresh-faced act recently recorded with Nick Borgosz at World of Noise Studios (Bryan Johnson & Family, M.A.G.S.). We recommend these guys if you would be interested in hearing what Dave Monks (Tokyo Police Club) would sound like as front man of The Rapture or Interpol. You can check out our personal favorite track from Three Songs, “Reversed,” below.

Wednesday, March 12th Haley Blais @ 9th Ward   Vancouver’s Haley Blais will make her first stop in Buffalo with tour mates Wormy. The band had originally planned to stop here in late September, however, the concert gods felt otherwise and Blais had to reschedule. Now here we are, with the same lineup and a new opportunity to check out the singer/songwriter’s cheeky sound.   Signed to the record label Arts & Crafts (Andy Shauf, Broken Social Scene, Feist, & MANY MORE), Blais’ sound is lush with clever lyrics that navigate life in your twenties in the 2020s. Touring in support of their latest album Wisecrack, fans of Caroline Rose, Soccer Mommy, or Snail Mail would be pleased with Blais’ sound.   Starting things off right is Wormy, the music moniker for Brooklyn singer/songwriter Noah Rauchwerk.
