This is a show you definitely do not want to miss. Even if dancing isn’t your thing, you will have fun you will have at this show. The Tins are sure to sonically bring the house down with their new-wave rock that features tight grooves, tasteful electronic percussion, nostalgic vocal effects, and truly amazing guitar shredding.

Also on the bill is Rochester-grown The Demos, who will certainly have you dancing right out of your shoes with their upbeat, indie pop beats and catchy hooks that you’ll be humming for days.

The Leones are also joining in on the festivities, and they’ll have you feeling melancholic with their dreamy guitar parts and distant psychedelic vocals. Don’t fret about feeling somber though, because they also bring a nice “jam” to the table.

Another local act, Leyda, will be there as well. For this show, Leyda-lead Saffi Rigberg will be giving a solo performance. Her multi-instrumental talent, celestial voice, and compelling lyrics are going to make for a stellar show.

With an all-around solid lineup like this, it is recommend that you come for the whole experience. Doors at 9pm with an $8 cover.

Opening the show will be the wonderful fellas of Feverbox also home for the holiday weekend and fresh off the release of their righteous Political Theater EP, the always excellent power pop of The Demos, in town from Rochester with tunes from their fine If You Only Knew EP, and high flying local punks SMUG. Doors are at 9pm and tickets are $10.

Then they do a music video for it that’s smart, funny, beautifully shot, and exceptionally edited for maximum wit and charm? I mean, that Super 8 bit over the bridge that calls to mind Talking Heads videos with an early 90’s psychedelic Flaming Lips aesthetic is above and beyond the call of duty, especially when elegantly yet jarringly juxtaposed with that quotidian awkward date scene. It’s getting out of hand but it’s all great so whatever. The If You Only Knew EP is out later this month, with The Demos touring with Jukebox The Ghost in September. No Buffalo dates on that tour, but they’ll play here again eventually, and it will be good.

The EP starts as you may expect, a pronounced drumbeat drives a backdrop of synth strings on “I Don’t Mind.” Bass drops in soon after that, but not before vocalist Jason Milton lays a smooth croon down. By the time the chorus hits, you’re left fumbling for the year—the whole package conjures early 2000’s indie rock a la The Killers or The Von Bondies, but with a certain modern charm. The appeal to this kind of music is right out in the forefront—soaring guitar chords, choruses to sing every word to, and hooks upon hooks.

The five-track EP covers all the bases, from the midtempo heartbreak of “Another Day” to the bass-driven hipshaker “Hardly Done.” You’ve got the do-wop indie waltz of album closer “Better,” which gets HUGE at the end with screaming dueling guitar solos and a closing group vocal advisory—“Better not let your heart go.” Throw these tracks on a playlist with fellow Rochesterites Joywave, and you’ve got yourself a perfect workout soundtrack. Just make sure that stairstepper is pretty isolated, because you’ll be singing along.

Right off the bat it has to be noted that the mix by Al Carlson at Gary’s Electric is beyond superb. Everything on the album has a scale and sense of space to it, helping HMJ’s home recordings operate in the sonic sandboxes of Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, Steve Drozd and Dave Friddman. The sense of density that permeates  Long Playing Lo-Fidelity makes it feel timeless yet immediate and showcases the talent and ambition that’s been part of Longwave and done production work for (blog favorites) The Demos.

“Human Blood” gets Long Playing Lo-Fidelity going with an exuberant burst of fuzzed out psych rock that sets up the lead single “Fast Friends” perfectly, a hazily melancholic piece of soulful and fuzzed out pop music that finds catharsis in a sax solo reminiscent of both M83’s “Midnight City” and Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.” “Heartstrings” and “Harmonious Honk” are lo-fi takes on Jeff Lynne’s ELO and Sweden’s tripped out choir I’m From Barcelona, both of whom used different approaches to find similar celestial sounds. “Sinner Go Home” with it’s mellotrons and aching vocals, is an unexpected slice of psychedelic gospel soul,  while “How The Story Goes” and “Rocking Chair” feel like the progeny generated by the holy union of Mercury Rev and Supergrass.

Excellently sequenced,  the album cranks it all up for a big finish, with glammed out stompers “Here’s A Love Song” and “4th Of July Buzz” setting up a tight finale featuring the funky and slinky “Cry Wolf” and a lovely, summery coda in “Marco Polo,” ideal during Western New York winters. In many regards, this isn’t so much an “album of the week” as an “album for right bloody now.” This fine collection of fuzzed out ear candy is rewarding, delicious, and requires your attention immediately.
