Second wave emo forefathers Sunny Day Real Estate hit the big stage at Electric City for a night of nostalgic feels mid-week. Formed in Seattle, Washington in 1992, the band has been credited for the recipe and rise of the Midwest emo sound. Sunny Day has been inspired many of the movers and shakers in the third wave of emo and early to mid 2000s pop punk fields, serving as a major influence and inspiration on their songwriting styles. If you’re a fan of The Get Up Kids, The Promise Ring, or Appleseed Cast then you already know about Sunny Day Real Estate and you already have your ticket most likely. It’s $49.32.

Lazlo Hollyfeld Plays In Rainbows @ Town Ballroom

It’s no secret that we are major fans of Lazlo Hollyfeld at the blog – they have been one of the most consistent acts since buffaBLOG’s inception. We’ve collaborated on multiple Halloween parties at Mohawk Place where the band did sold-out tributes to LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire. Whatever avenue the band has taken, whether it be their own experimental jam-tinged indie psych or paying tribute to some of the most beloved artists of the generation, Lazlo always brings it.

This Saturday, Lazlo Hollyfeld extends their chameleon prowess to play one of Radiohead’s most beloved albums, In Rainbows. Expect to be mesmerized and lose yourself in the moment. $29.50 cover.

Dead Gowns makes a stop at our favorite basement venue this Sunday. Genevieve Beaudoin, the brains and voice behind the project, has a light and twangy sound, blending elements of of indie folk, rock, and alt-country with her commanding voice. Fans of Big Thief, Cat Power, or Neko Case would be into this one. Show up early for sets by Rattlesnake Jake, who had our Album of the Week earlier this year, and indie singer/songwriter Bryan Dubay who is in the midst of pumping out a bunch of singles, $25 cover.

Rattlesnake Jake, the moniker of Buffalo-based songwriter Jake Marciniak, has unveiled their debut EP, Oh, How Easy, a vibrant collection of five tracks that navigate the complex terrain of love, loss, and self-discovery. Released independently on March 1st, the EP arrives as a welcome spring offering, it’s colorful wildflower cover mirroring the warmth and eclectic energy found within. Following a single released last November, the EP introduces Marciniak as a main player in the power pop scene. Oh, How Easy is our album of the week.

Oh, How Easy showcases Marciniak’s self-sufficient approach, as they wrote, recorded, and produced the entire EP themselves. The sonic landscape traverses a range of genres, from the punchy power pop of “Needed,” to the emotionally charged indie rock of “Three Little Words,” which incorporates synth alongside massive group vocals. Album opener “Through the Walls” dives immediately into the EP’s themes, showcasing the artist’s multi-instrumental prowess. The acoustic-driven “Close Enough” offers a moment of alt-country inspired intimacy, while the closing track, “Pleasant Sensations,” is a dreamy acoustic reverie.

The EP appears to follow a narrative arc, tracing a journey from the pain of a relationship’s end to the hopeful anticipation of a new beginning. Lyrically, Marciniak explores themes of vulnerability and honesty, with lines that are both relatable and deeply personal. Their vocal delivery possesses a charming sincerity that complements the emotional weight of the songs.

Oh, How Easy presents Rattlesnake Jake as a songwriter with a distinct, tactile approach. The EP feels built from hand-selected sonic materials–a dash of 90s alt-rock here, a sprinkle of emotional power pop there–all assembled with a cohesive lyrical core. It’s a collection of tracks that feel lived-in, each one a snapshot of a particular emotional space–a fine introduction for a songwriter with a palpable artistic curiosity. Oh, How Easy is available now on Bandcamp.

Wednesday, March 12th

Haley Blais @ 9th Ward

Vancouver’s Haley Blais will make her first stop in Buffalo with tour mates Wormy. The band had originally planned to stop here in late September, however, the concert gods felt otherwise and Blais had to reschedule. Now here we are, with the same lineup and a new opportunity to check out the singer/songwriter’s cheeky sound.

Signed to the record label Arts & Crafts (Andy Shauf, Broken Social Scene, Feist, & MANY MORE), Blais’ sound is lush with clever lyrics that navigate life in your twenties in the 2020s. Touring in support of their latest album Wisecrack, fans of Caroline Rose, Soccer Mommy, or Snail Mail would be pleased with Blais’ sound.

Starting things off right is Wormy, the music moniker for Brooklyn singer/songwriter Noah Rauchwerk. He may look familiar as his other gig is the touring drummer for Samia. It will be $18 at the door.

Thursday, March 13th @ 8pm

Bryan Dubay @ Milkies

Buffalo musician Bryan Dubay takes his act to the Elmwood Strip this Thursday evening. Dubay has been another one of the artists to emerge post-COVID, making waves with his lush full band sound that dabbles in post-punk, psych-pop, and indie rock. Combining the three creates an accessible sound that delivers the jams and could be an easy Buffalo export to the blogosphere. Dubay will be playing in support of his new single “Silence” which was released late last week.

Also on the bill is Rattlesnake Jake, the solo project of Jake Marciniak, the frequent collaborator of Adelaide and former Market Research singer. Rounding out the bill will be indie folk artist, Addisyn Logan *, who we’ve been buzzing about since her live set last month with buffaBLOG sessions. $10 cover gets you in. Save room for the mozz sticks.

Romcom Victims @ Milkies

Milkies is set to host another bill full of up-and-comers this Saturday. If you are looking for a quick overview of what the indie scene in Buffalo is going to be like over the next few years, throw down $12 and pay attention as this curated lineup of up-and-comers.

The bill features indie-pop act, Makeout Tactics * (who also had a great session with us released last month), indie rock outfit Romcom Victims, and alt/post-emo act KRIGGY.
