Today Thin Man Brewery celebrates their second annual Summer Solstice street festival, where the up-and-coming establishment takes over the Elmwood Village block between W. Utica and Hodge and provides ample tunes from talented locals as well plenty of craft beers to wet your whistle. Doors start at 12pm with the fun going until about 10pm. Tickets are $20 for the GA with a $30 VIP option for the high rollers.

Here are five bands we recommend checking out today, beer in hand.

The CPX (3pm)

If there is a community festival in Buffalo, chance are the CPX will make an appearance on the bill – and with good reason. The Americana-country leaning outfit has been in the local scene for years with their accessible sound and commanding stage presence, the CPX is a good lead-in to an afternoon of brews and sunshine.

Bold Folly (5:30pm)

Bold Folly are an up-and-coming hard-hitting rock band in the local scene whose sound has been evolved from a “cavernous psych rock” beginning to a angstier, louder, more angular rock and roll roller coaster that fans of Pile would appreciate.

Eighty Dollar Kleenex by Bold Folly

Humble Braggers (7:10pm)

Fresh off the release of their new single “Reckless” (dropped yesterday) Humble Braggers aim to bring their catchy electro-pop stylings to the main stage – expect 4/4 beats, lush vocals, and 80’s synths to fill your ear drums for a solid 40 minutes. If you’re into JOYWAVE, M83, or Tears for Fears, then Humble Braggers are not to be missed.

dreambeaches (8pm)

dreambeaches are one of the most commanding acts in the local scene right now. The ever-expanding baroque pop act in the past year has gorwn from their bare bones four-piece to bringing on a string and horn section. When the band’s power combines, dreambeaches creates a dance-y, upbeat, and intricate sound that will move your feet and command your ears.
Disappearing Act by dreambeaches

RADARADA (9pm)

Queen City hip hop collective RADARADA closes out the night with their laid back, jazzy instrumentals fronted by a trio of charismatic front people to create the crescendo to a night of good brews and good vibes. Dubbed by many as one of Buffalo’s best live acts, RADARADA aims to get the crowd moving with their hyper focused stage show and tag-in-and-outs on the microphone. Stay until then end, it’ll be GUCCI, we promise.

Editor’s note: Each week, Cory Perla of The Public asks a local musician to tell us why they love their favorite piece of gear.

wZa is hip-hop producer and member of the Buffalo-based hip-hop groups Radarada and Death Picnic. His solo debut full length, AzN CHiKz, comes out this winter.

“I love this piece of equipment because it is very versatile and has it’s own unique sound. Not a lot of other beatmakers I know use one as their main piece of gear, so it helps separate my sound from other producer’s sound. It’s also great because it works perfectly for live performance with the bands I play in — Radarada and Death Picnic. It’s great in the studio or my bedroom when I’m making my own beats. I also love it because it has my own design to it, so when I play it, I feel pretty cool.” – wZa

Radarada, one of Buffalo’s most prolific hip-hop ensembles, promises to get you turned up tonight at Nietzsche’s. They’re playing all the old favorites that most fans know by heart. It’s no secret these guys are a lot of fun on stage and put on a high-energy show that keeps you buzzing for hours afterwards, but I have to say since I first saw them perform last summer, the band has grown significantly more confident and comfortable in their sound. This forward mobility breaths new life into songs I’ve heard before, making them sound more rich and dynamic with each performance. If you miss out on seeing them tonight, catch them tomorrow at the Elmwood Village Associations’ 20 Block Bash (between West Utica and Hodge) from 5pm -10 pm.

Also featured in tonight’s showcase is one of Buffalo’s freshest hip-hop outfits, Death Picnic featuring Short Moscato. They offer no lulls in the high-energy or good time. The group features a full-band with focus on instrumentals that compliment Moscato’s lyrical rhymes, and is little less dance-centric than Rada with a more traditional hip-hop style. Like Rada, Moscato’s beats tell a story, but the content is so different that the vibe seems to shift. The MC will be spitting songs off his new album called Whatever Forever, set to drop next Friday, September 25th, so don’t miss out on a chance to catch that new new before everyone else does.

To balance out the evening, a performance by the jazz band Frontstreet Men promises to slow things down, let the audience take a breath and feel all the right feels. There may not be many opportunities to see these talented groups perform together in one evening, so don’t miss out.

Don’t miss out on a great mix of local talent jamming out at Nietzsche’s all night long. The showcase will be a perfect mix of highs and lows with both new material and some warmly familiar beats from some of Buffalo’s finest hip-hop and jazz musicians. Music starts at 10pm with a cover of $5

With three songs already in the bag, the project appears to be rather eclectic, with songs styles ranging from layered, neo soul and R&B to lo-fi kooky observational sing songs

Today’s experimental track, “Pole Dance Students,” is and ode to well, new students to dancing on poles. The track is best served with the bass turned up.

You can follow the daily progress over at Little Cake’s soundcloud page here. In the mean time, check out her day three song below.

The OTHER Curly’s is set to host the laid back hip hop group Radarada this evening in the venue’s West Side basement. The collective has made quite an impression since its debut LP First Edition dropped late last spring, boasting some of the city’s finest lyricists in Toomy Too, Wza, and Little Cake.

Joining the Rada crew tonight will be neo R&B act Hop Hop, the newish project from Mallwalkers and Mink vocalist Jaz Frazier, in addition to the regrouped indie rock act the Etchings and dreamy Boston slackers Harmoos.

Music is set to kick off sometime around 7pm with doors opening around 6pm. Bring a few bucks to cover the touring act, and if you have find yourself at the Blasdell Curly’s later on, you took a wrong turn.

Among the many things I’ve been digging about this “New Buffalo” has been the synergy generated when organizations and interests come together in an effort to bring people together and do good work. Case in point: tonight’s latest installment of the ongoing collaboration of The Public Presents and The Good Neighborhood at Nietzsche’s featuring the debut of ZSD, the latest project from the always magnificent Zuri Appleby, working with Deshawn “D Ray” Jackson and Sike.

$5 or the donation of a gently used musical instrument to Music Is Art and later a deserving Buffalo Public School music student, gets you in the door at 8pm to see what Zuri’s been up to, plus Radarada and the Vitamin D Duo while hanging out with folks from insurgent weekly newspaper The Public and community organization The Good Neighborhood. You just might catch a glimpse of what our “New Buffalo” looks and sounds like.

My first ever encounter with Radarada was at their debut EP release show last June at Iron Works. I happened to be helping out with the show that night, and witnessed their soundcheck when the venue was still emptied out. I remember being impressed and maybe a little transfixed with how meticulous they were with their setup, levels, the whole shebang.

I watched the show from the balcony (you know, that little overhang in Iron Works that everyone peers up at and wonders how the hell to get up there) and from a bird’s eye perspective, I almost felt it a special privilege getting to see all these separate pockets of eager fans sway and chant about sippin’ Nyquil in the daytime in unison.

Radarada goes down smooth. Real smooth. With a solid foundation of polished jazz instrumentals, they unite the smoky vocal stylings of Ana Vafai and hip-hop finesse of Tommy Too and wZa that remind me of contemporary emcee Wax.

If you’re already planning to go out tonight, hit up Mr. Goodbar. If you’re not already planning to go out, still hit up Mr. Goodbar. When it comes to stage presence and just getting the crowd pumped to be hanging out and listening to good tunes, these guys don’t disappoint. You can catch performances from DJ Grown ‘n Sexy, Kinda Like Dreamin and more throughout the night as well. More info here.

Check out Radarada’s EP, First Edition, below. Show starts at 9pm.
