Pohgoh – “Over/Under”

ICYMI, Florida-based Pohgoh‘s been on a bit of a hot streak lately (see our previous features of both “Hammer” and “Weeds“). Like “Hammer” and “Weeds” before it, “Over/Under” carries on the storied tradition of mid-to-late 90s emo – think heartfelt vocals; punchy guitars; and sugar-sweet melodies that, while fun and endearing, can’t help but inspire you to feel real feelings. As an overarching theme across their most recent output, “Over/Under” deals with singer Susie Ulrey’s MS diagnosis and the different ways it’s affected her life. Check out what she has to say below: “‘Over/Under’ is about the random uncertainty of odds while living through a traumatic experience. In the fall of 2018 I spent 3 terrifying weeks in the hospital (including a stint in the ICU) due to a very rare reaction to an MS (Mulitple Sclerosis) treatment I had taken years prior. Pohgoh – “Hammer”

Pohgoh is carrying on the storied tradition of late 90s emo – fully evident in their latest release, “Hammer.” With plenty of guitar jangle and endearing and emotional vocals, “Hammer” continues their streak of excellent, basement-show emo tunes with an overarching theme of anxiety and depression. Heart wrenching lyrics give a powerful and poignant look at singer Susie Ulrey’s MS diagnosis, as well as the anxieties that came along with the pandemic. Pohgoh is planning an album, du und ich, due out November 4th… Get a taste of what to expect from “Hammer” below. ICYMI, we recently featured Pohgoh’s song “Weeds” too – definitely worth a listen. You can find “Hammer” in lots of places online – check them all out here.

Pohgoh – “Weeds”

Pohgoh has an interesting backstory – originally formed in 1994, broken up in 1997, and reunited in 2016, they’ve had a long and storied history in the indie/emo world. They’re back with another new song and we love the jaunty and heartfelt vibes found on “Weeds.” Appropriately bringing to mind the raw emo sound of the late 90s a la Rainer Maria; Plumtree; or Rilo Kiley, “Weeds” pairs gentle and sweet vocals with crispy guitar work that would sound perfect blasting out of your favorite basement venue. “Weeds” has a very powerful lyrical presence as well, which Susie from Pohgoh explains below: “After my Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis one year into our marriage, Keith and I (Susie) became an ‘us against the world’ kind of couple. We’ve been in the weeds together since 2001, ducking every curveball MS throws at us. “Weeds” is about living with illness and loss and the[...]
