Nashville indie folk act The Arcadian Wild makes a mid-week stop on their national tour at our favorite basement venue, the 9th Ward. Known for their immersions of indie, chamber pop, and bluegrass, the band is still buzzing from their critically acclaimed 2023 album, Welcome. If you are a fan of Chris Thile / Nickel Creek, The Crane Wives or Tophouse (both bands coming soon to Buffalo), then you will be pleased as punch for this one. $25 cover.

Lower Pony (Release Show) @ Milkies

Lower Pony has been grinding through Buffalo’s underground slacker scene for a bit now – with some very familiar faces, especially if you’ve has a grasp of the local scene over the past fifteen+ years. The project formed in 2019 as a collaboration between Harvest Sum Records affiliates Dave Calos (Bearhunter, Applennium, Sonny Baker Band) and Ryan Besch (Roger Bryan and the Orphans, Strange Acres). Lower Pony expanded during the pandemic’s creative lulls to add former Wooden Waves co-frontman / current Aye Karou guitarist Ray Fulton to the mix. After a slew of temp drummers, the band has finally settled down with Evil Things / Passed Out’s Andy Pothier to kick things up a notch. With this special blend, the band is finally set to release their new 7″ record, Bluette, at Milkies this Saturday. Joining the bill will be local punks Personal Style, Uniform Operator, and Headbutt. $10 cover.

Frame and Mantle @ Amy’s Place / Area 54

Pittsburgh-based indiemo act Frame and Mantle returns to their previous stomping grounds this Sunday for a Bills-less Sunday. The familiar-faced four-piece has done the near impossible for a band, survived as a project for more than ten years. Since forming in 2014, the band has has went through a few lineups and re-settled in a couple cities, however since making Pittsburgh their home, the band has settled and found its place as an emerging indie act in the regional rust belt scene. The band even ripped a session with a previous iteration of buffaBLOG sessions in 2014 (we have a new season coming up by the way).

Touring in support of their summer 2025 album, Well of Light, the band will be sharing the stage newish post hardcore emos KRIGGY and alt and rollers Oscar’s Cash. $10 cover.

Dexter and the Moonrocks @ Town Ballroom

Turn off the porch light and put a “Gone 2 Dexter and the Moonrocks” note up for the trick-or-treaters this Thursday. The Abilene-based quartet will be making their Buffalo debut on a very scary evening in support of their latest EP Western Space Grunge. The band is an amalgamation of indie rock, grunge, and a sprinkle of country – an homage to the band’s Texas roots. Much to our delight, Dexter and the Moonrocks’ sound is very sing-a-long friendly with numerous singles chock full of heavy hooks. Fans of FIDLAR, White Reaper, or Wavves would be into this one. Doors are $27.22 all-in.

Light Beams w/ Personal Style, Welks Mice, and echolocator @ Area 54

Dischord Records signees Light Beams returns to Buffalo after a multi-year absence, last playing in the area pre-COVID at the now defunct Sugar City in the late 2010s. The Washington, D.C. dance punk act will be headlining an intimate show on the Kenmore Strip with some quality local support. This would be right up the alley for any fans of Q and Not U, Foals, or Duran Duran. Sharing the bill will be local punk act’s swan song Personal Style, anti-folk xylophone duo Welks Mice, and first wave youngsters echolocator. This is a very stacked line-up and a great chance to catch a promising touring act and Buffalo’s underground music scene, all for $10.

Pink Skies w/ Gabacho and asalone @ Rec Room

Hazy electronica act Pink Skies is set to headline an early week showcase. Hailing from Oakland, Pink Skies evolved from the punk scene but found their psych-pop and R&B-tinged tracks to be a little outside the box for that ethos. Doubling down on their sound, the project has produced for Khalid and Glass Animals and shared the stage with some of the most buzzed-about current artists including Goth Babe, Day Wave, and The Knocks. If you are into Tame Impala, Argonaut & Wasp, or MGMT then head down to Chippewa on Monday.

Joining the bill is former Tins guitarist Adam Putzer with his solo project asalone, and Chicago-based Mexican surf-rock act Gabacho. $20.55 at the door.

Personal Style is a three-piece punk band from Buffalo made up of Bryan Johnson, Evan Wachowski, and Stephen Floyd. Their latest jam is a crunched-out indie-punk song they’re calling “False Memories” – with ultra chunky guitar distortion, punchy drum sounds, and nimble bass plunking, the trio brings to mind fellow genre luminaries like Parquet Courts, LVL UP, and Cloud Nothings. Of particular note here is Johnson’s soaring vocals, which he uses perfectly to cut through the angular punk grime with plenty of tasty melodies.

“False Memories” was recorded at Mammoth Recording Studio here in Buffalo with Justin Smith and Mike Santillo. Be sure to check it out (as well as song two, “Heartbeat Memorial”) on Bandcamp below.

The brainchild of local musician, producer and budding impresario Brandon Schlia, Steak & Cake Records has been a vital to the Buffalo music scene, and tonight area record label Steak & Cake Records celebrates nine years at Curly’s with a killer lineup of acts from their troupe of artists and an album release from Buffalo by way of Philadelphia grunge rockers Wylie Something. Spacey and pleasingly gnarly, Wylie Something is the latest project from Jacob Smolinski, previously of Cascos and Local Onlys, and he’s back in town to celebrate the release of his sophomore LP Welcome? which arrives today for your listening pleasure.

Tonight’s lineup also features indie pop duo Olmsted, indie power pop duo Patchwork (one half of which is the boss Schlia himself), budding rock heroes Johnny & the Man Kids, garage punks Personal Style, and soulful art rocker outfit The Best Strangers will also be on hand to kick it out. Doors are at 6pm and cover is $5.

There is nothing new under the sun. That being said, to express yourself you need to take your influences and make them your own. The fresh-faced Buffalo band of familiar faces, Personal Style, have released their first demo tape, a six song collection of tight punk rock, which they branded as their own.

“Total Kontrol,” a title that shows Personal Style making the English language their own, kicks off the demo. Bryan Johnson (of Bryan Johnson and Family, honeyCOMA) delivers a punk-classic three chord winding guitar riff for two measures until the drums enter. Evan Wachowski’s jumpy drum beat establishing the song’s pulse thumps to life low in the mix. Think Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life.” Then the song explodes into a full on punk ringer. The vocals, a low almost flat delivery in the vein of garage rock heroes Pavement, tell about a classic punk trope. The urge for freedom. “I live my life so full of fear/ My life is an empty hole/ All it time I want it all/ All I want is total control.”

Track two, the deliciously demented titled “Brain Flu,” highlights the bass playing of Stephen Floyd (Mallwalkers, Mapmaker), as he handles the three chord riff allowing the guitar sound to expand. Johnson moves from the water-tight guitar to a free flowing two chord riff with that sounds like an echo pedal effect. The fuzzed out guitar washes over the tight bass and drums for eight measures until all three components snap together and begin to drive the song. Vocals on “Brain Flu” differ from “Total Kontrol,” as the delivery comes across as sharp and in the vein of The Dead Kennedy’s Jello Biafra.

Just when you do not know how Personal Style can break more creative ground they deliver track three, “Bubble Yum.” The guitar riff at the beginning of the track uses a similar effect pedal that we hear on ‘Brain Flu’. Johnson delivers a start and stop riff that makes the listener feel as though they are tripping over their own feet, and just when the teasing becomes too much Wachowski and Floyd join in to push the song.

After one listen to the short demo, each song clocks in at two minutes or under, the members’ musical skill and creativity become evident. To have a small frame work to operate inside of has given Personal Style the ability to dig deeper into the punk rock genre and emerge with a collection that is truly unique. Make sure to catch their live shows around the city, as they will surely be a lesson in DIY artistic expression.Demo 2019 by Personal StyleWritten by Kevin Prentice

The post Personal Style – Demo 2019 first appeared on buffaBLOG.
