One of our favorite releases from last summer came from the Get Money Squad. Featuring Quinton Brock and Jon Bap of Network, the act’s short, self-coined “urban surf” EP was the perfect blend of off beat Mac DeMarco meets Shuggie Otis/Bill Withers lo-fi vibes. The group went on to open for Girl Talk at Canalside, but since then have been pretty quiet. With the release of Money Squad’s latest single “Pillow Talk,” though, Brock and crew are back to once again to help soundtrack our latest rust-belt summer.

The rather sensual “Pillow Talk,” a track the band describes as a “song for summer lovers,” appears to be the first single off of the Get Money Squad’s forthcoming EP, titled Ruff Buff, and while the group has maintained its lo-fi sounds, Brock now appears to be vocally channeling the Beach Boys and even the soulful side My Morning Jacket (those falsettos are very Jim James-esque).

Keep an eye out for Ruff Buff sometime this summer, and in the mean time, listen to “Pillow Talk” below.

Previewing his idiosyncratic songwriting style on releases with the Get Money Squad and hip hop trio Network, along with a solo single last year, Buffalo based singer/songwriter Jon Bap has shown a vast range of influences from indie rock and folk to soul and hip hop.

On his latest EP, Let It Happen, the artist presents six tracks of mellow rhythms, jazzy bass lines and soulful vocals that results in a multitude of compelling musical ideas. Despite somewhat minimal instrumentation, Jon Bap is able forge engaging drum grooves, paired with melodic guitar and rich bass allowing for a hypnotic effect like on “The Ending,” where an interesting breakdown is led by sprawling percussion. Other tracks like “Forced” and “Marissa” offer a more straightforward indie soul approach, with guitar reminiscent of Mac Demarco and more laid back, r&b vocals and rhythms.

Certainly not short on refreshing songwriting ideas, the Let It Happen EP is a promising release from an artist beginning to find a unique sonic space to craft quality forward thinking songs. Listen/download below.

Last night, Quinton Brock of Network and producer Jon Bap debuted an interesting new project called The Get Money Squad. The pair is prepping the release of a debut EP and have shared their first single, titled “Back Again.” Those familiar with Network’s Death Grips inspired live shows will be pleasantly surprised to hear laid back, chiming guitars, and the smooth vocals of Brock, drawing comparisons to the latest albums from both Mac DeMarco and Ducktails. Check out “Back Again” below and keep an eye on the band’s soundcloud page for future tracks.

Buffalo experimental hip hop project Network have been hard at work on their latest album, expected out sometime early this summer. In the meantime, the group, who recently added former New York producer/songwriter Jon Bap as a full-time member, has shared a new track titled “Winter.” The wavy instrumental moves with a creeping pace, with sharp percussion and washes of feedback, providing a surreal soundtrack to lyricist Quinton Brock’s stream-of-consciousness delivery. The track is available as a free download and hint’s at more genre-defying, ambitious material from the group in the future.
