Tonight: Science Man LP Release Show

Come out and get weird tonight at Buffalo’s Electric Avenue as the mysterious lo-fi hard rocker, Science Man, celebrates the release of his debut self-titled LP and the first stop on his new tour. Born out of a science experiment gone horribly wrong, or horribly right, Science Man (John Toohill) is a self-described “monstrosity of rock and roll.” His stellar new album is made up of 11 tracks of gnarly and grimy garage rock that will melt your face faster than a Bunsen burner. Emerging from a dark cavern somewhere beneath the earth, one of the top groups in Buffalo’s metal scene, Malarchuk have unleashed their new self titled EP. It’s a winding journey that carries you through heavy riffs, some 70s prog rock goodness, and doom rock passages that are held together strong by engaging melodic progressions. Making up Malarchuk are guitarist, Tim Domes, Patrick Johnson on bass and vocals, and drummer,  Adam Hinckley. An important thing to note is that although this is coming out as Malarchuk’s EP, as a kind of throwback to prog rock of years gone by, this album is the length of some band’s LPs. Coming in at over 35 minutes of rock, but with only four tracks on the record, prog fans will know what that means. The track, “Night Tear’r (Longjammer)” comes in at over 15 minutes for instance. Tonight: Nik Turner’s Hawkwind

Tonight, legendary flutist and vocalist Nik Turner will be bringing his edition of the legendary UK space rock band Hawkwind to Buffalo’s own Mohawk Place for a special show featuring San Francisco kraut rock outfit Hedersleben. Nik Turner’s Hawkwind will without a doubt melt some brains at the Mohawk with their heavy sound, science fiction and metaphysical explorations, avant-garde use of strings and wood instruments, and otherworldly vocalizations of the guru-like visionary Turner. Don’t plan on operating heavy machinery for a while after this show. Fusing Tuetonic Krautrock stridency and their own sci-fi apocalyptic space rock musings, the Bay area’s Hedersleben will get the mood set right, along with local favorites Handsome Jack and Hawkwind fans Malarchuk. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention that Hawkwind featured a young Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, so nostalgic Motorhead fans won’t want to miss this. Tickets are $10, with doors at 7pm and show at 8pm.

Rock’n’roll is alive and well in the Rust Belt, and in spite of the shit weather, is making a home at Mohawk Place tonight. Rochester’s King Buffalo makes its return to our fair city with a sinewy brand of stoner hymns (Think Quest for Fire), along with Buffalo hings of heavy, Malarchuk, rock’n’roll throwback machines, the Evil Things, and Merchants/Space Wolves-by-way-of-new-name, Kharlos. This show is quintessential Buffalo winter. Drink Pabsts, get loose, shake hips, fun, smile, party. Action Jackson at 8pm.

Tonight: Attack of the Vinyl Mondays – Malarchuk Edition

In what should be the start of a very busy couple weeks here in town, ease the month gently as Buffalo’s best vinyl night, Attack of the Vinyl  Mondays, is back in action at Essex St. Pub later this evening. Tonight, stoner rock trio, Malarchuk, will be setting up behind the tables to spin some of their favorite records. Vinyl Mondays’ ringmaster, Eric Kendall, will also be on hand as usual to play the best in garage, rock, punk, and more. The vinyl starts spinning tonight at 10pm. Cover is, as always, free.

Over the last couple years, a weird thing’s happened in the Buffalo music scene: a ton of mid-level rock music clubs closed. With the departure of long-time staples like Mohawk Place, Soundlab, The Vault, and even, like, that place that used to be Blue Monk, most area bands and promoters have been forced to shoot for either opening slots at bigger downtown halls, or organize house parties at one of the myriad, illegal basements. This kinda sucked on one hand, but on the other, it forced local music to adjust, and move beyond its arguable state of atrophy; things kinda had to change. So bands broke up and re-organized in better forms, and new, oddball venues started getting a lot of traction.
