Fans of ambient art folk are in for a treat tonight. In a special event at unorthodox venue Silo City, singer-songwriter Julie Byrne makes her return to Buffalo. Joining her are natives Lara Buckley and Noah Falck.

Julie Byrne, who was born and raised in Buffalo, is touring in support of her acclaimed sophomore album Not Even Happiness. Byrne’s compositions here are earthy and intimate, making use of intricate guitar fingerpicking with occasional light string accompaniment or samples. Her cross-country travels are inherent in these songs, and especially evident in her picturesque and poetic lyricism.

Local artist Lara Buckley is known for her bombastic and spiritual sound collages, combining layers of vocals, synthetic instrumentation and natural field recordings. Noah Falck is the education director at Just Buffalo Literary Center, and he’ll be reading some of his own opaque-yet-poignant style poetry. The show begins at 8pm at Silo City. Tickets are $20.

Two Orindal Records label mates are slated to hit Buffalo tonight. Advance Base and Karima Walker both bring their own unique brands of lo-fi pop to Mohawk Place. Joining them will be two local solo acts, Lara Buckley and Matt Script.

Headlining the show is Chicago-based act Advance Base, the solo project of former Casiotone for the Painfully Alone member Owen Ashworth. Still riding the wave of his well-received record Nephew in the Wild, Ashworth’s sound is layered an array of electronic keyboards, employing minimalist arrangements that pair well with his heavy-hearted, soul-baring lyricism. Tucson singer-songwriter Karima Walker offers up an ambient and experimental kind of folk music, combining traditional folk melodies with tape loops and samples.

Sound collage artist Lara Buckley opens the show, followed by loop-machine singer-songwriter Matt Script. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Bring $ or food for bands to Hickory Urban Sanctuary at tonight for an indiscernible gig.

Frank Hurricane is less of a tropical storm and more of a wind through a field of wheat. The touring troubadour’s folkster Americana is pure good vibes and will surely feel fully supported by Buffalo acts. Bul Bul Tarang Gang will be gearing up and Lara Buckley’s a master of musical instruments who shines with the assistance of a loop. The unpindownable genre defying Jack Toft escapes definition and is also set to play some cool original tunes.

Food and music will be served at 6pm.

Today is going to be a busy Saturday. If you’re looking to get the most out of your all-access Herd Fest bracelet, your itinerary will take you to Record Theatre in the afternoon, Black Dots in the evening, and the Buffalo bustle of Allen Street to cap off your fat schedule at a number of Allen’s finest watering holes. And if you tough it out and stay up and at ‘em for the final show of the night, you’ll find yourself at Nietzsche’s for the stacked, jacked and packed Silo Sessions showcase.

Thanks to weekly videos of Silo Sessions—one of the local music scene’s newest and most unique upstarts—the cavernous natural reverb of Buffalo’s old grain silos has proven to be a valuable sonic entity in one of the city’s coolest new music spots. Since its inception last year, Silo Sessions has recorded over thirty musical performances in the Silos, with genres ranging folk, punk, indie, Americana, and more.

Tonight, the front and back stages of Nietzsche’s will see a solid handful of the artists involved with the new vlog in what looks to be one of Herdfest’s busiest and most diverse showcases. That diversity includes the following, starting at 10 PM sharp: Bourbon and Coffee, Tiny Rhymes, Helen, Lara Buckley, Alex Berkley and Sonny Baker, Viking Moses, Pam Swarts, and Aircraft, to top it all off. If you didn’t buy yourself a fancy Herd Fest bracelet (tsk tsk), fret not—tonight’s showcase will cost you a mere five bucks at the door. See you there.

In what is probably the largest non-festival local bill so far this year, Mohawk Place will play host to a deliciously wide spectrum of musical talent tonight. Beginning at 8pm, with no definitive headliner, tonight’s performances are to include the eclectic klezmer vibes of Ahavaraba, the powerful acoustic songwriting of Lara Buckley, Different Planets’ electronoise lounge beats, Rochester’s Makeshift Letterbox and their thick and eerie post rock, abrasive feminist punkers Jamie and the Debt, Pam Swarts’ beautifully layered art rock expeditions, Buffalo’s favorite saucy alt rap duo Jack Topht and Little Cake, and finally electro/house duo Fashion Expo 1990, who will be closing out the night at 11:30. *Inhales deeply*

Mohawk Place will be divided into two separate stages for the monster of a bill, with live music being played endlessly from 8pm until after midnight. I know it’s getting warm out, but don’t wear flip-flops—more than just a few of these bands/collectives/artists/duos will get you dancing.

Music starts at 8pm so get there on time and with a fiver in hand for that cover charge.

French Polynesian experimental duo, Cantenac Dagar, create challenging instrumental music using banjo’s, cassette player’s, and human beatbox to achieve an often abrasive, drone-oriented sound. The pair’s latest release, a nearly thirty minute, one-track effort titled BUREC, develops slowly to reveal a raw, abrasive style with built around primal percussion. Tonight, the two will be performing at Mohawk Place where Cantenac Dagar will also play a set as the duo’s acoustic alter-ego, Fort Crèvecœur, which incorporates more traditional instrumentation with the same avant-garde inclinations as Cantenac Dagar.

Also performing tonight are Buffalo experimental folk musician Lara Buckley, whose sparse acoustic arrangements combined with an other-worldly vocal delivery makes for a meditative take on the genre as well as local duo Double Memory. Show starts at 8pm. Admission is $5.
