Hailing from So-Cal, self-described “borderland post punk” group The Slashes brings us a goth-tinged delight with “Dead Majesty.” The bass does much of the heavy lifting with some sick riffs, but singer Esteban Rene keeps things spooky with his haunting voice and ethereal sounding guitar. Fans of Interpol, She Wants Revenge, or The Cure will find lots to dig into on this one…

Evoking the usual Cure and Interpol comparisons is easy to do, and even accurate to a point, but The Slashes put forth a good case with enough to differentiate them from contemporaries in the genre.

You can hear “Dead Majesty” and more of the band’s tracks over on Spotify or Bandcamp. Be sure to let us know if you’d like to hear more from this band or post punk in general!

New York City post-punk act Interpol makes their return to the area with a show at Town Ballroom tonight. After forming in 1997, they burst onto the scene with 2002’s Turn on the Bright Lights which forever cemented them into the indie-rock canon. Along with The Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, they defined the sound of the early 2000’s NYC scene.

After a hiatus the band is back with the 2018 release of Matador. While not as strong as Turn on the Bright Lights, it’s very clearly the band’s strongest release in a decade. The band followed this up most recently with A Fine Mess, a five track EP they released in May 2019. With an instantly recognizable sound and catchy, danceable hooks, this concert is sure to appeal to long time listeners as well as recent converts. Expect to hear a mix of songs, but focused heavily on Turn off the Bright Lights and Antics. Doors at 7pm, music at 8pm. Sold out.

What an amazing and miraculous time to be a music fan in Buffalo, NY! Not only is there a Strokes tribute band operating in the area featuring some of Buffalo’s best musicians in the form of Different Strokes, but now there’s a tribute band for their erstwhile “rivals” Interpol… featuring more of the city’s best going by the name of Outerpol, and both are colliding tonight to do metaphorical battle at the Mohawk as part of their run up to Halloween.

Fans of early aughts NYC indie rock have to get downtown to catch the Different Strokes crew (Tom “Humble Braggers” Burtless, John “Girl Jeans” Grace, Ryan “The Slums” Schilia, Griff “Feverbox” Smith, Ben “King of the Goths” Parsons) represent for the Converse and denim jacket crowd while Outerpol, featuring Cooler’s Nick Sessanna as well as Hundred Plus Club’s Zain Shirazi, Burak Spoth and Josh Gidwitz.

DJ Tight Mike Moretti will be spinning all your favorite indie rock favorites to get you in the mood, although if he really wanted to get you in the mood he’d play some butt rock to remind you of what these beloved NYC bands saved us from… but he’s not, I promise. Cover is $10 and doors are at 8pm. Costumes are encouraged, especially if you come decked out like Carlos D.

The words “new music from Interpol” used to not send cringes down my spine. There was a time when this band was still good and that time is long up. Save for the throw-back opening track, El Pintor is another album that lacks the swagger Carlos D used to bring to the band.

Still, my curiosity has remained strong whenever anything Interpol related is released,so naturally, the first track/video from Big Noble was at least click worthy. Big Noble is the side project from Interpol guitarist, Daniel Kessler, and upon first listen, its already better than most of Interpol’s last decade. Some of my favorite tracks from the band, “Untitled” and “Next Exit,” relied heavily on dreamy atmospherics, and that’s exactly what makes “Peg” so good. Its contemplative, minimal, and carries a lingering dense of dread that never really shows itself. The video pairs the song with gorgeous shots snowy landscapes and the haunting moon lit night sky

“Peg” can be found on Big Noble’s debut LP, First Light, set to drop in February. In the mean time, watch/listen to the video of “Peg” below.

Early aughts NYC post-punk darlings Interpol released a video for “My Desire,” the latest single off their underrated 2014 release El Pintor, and it’s a doozy. Directed by Markus Lundqvist, the atmospheric and mildly disturbing clip features the band providing a slow burning soundtrack to one man’s alcohol fueled mental breakdown in an otherwise pleasant roadhouse. It’s another great single from a band enjoying a revival of sorts after the ho-hum Interol in 2010 and a four year break that some thought signaled its end. Hopefully Interpol will return to WNY in 2015, but in the meantime…

Our former contributing photographer, Sean Mikula, sadly left town a couple years ago. After a stop in Chicago, he eventually settled in the Bay Area in California. While we won’t be seeing him shooting at the Ballroom any time soon, we are happy to have him back, submitting some great shots from his concert travels on the west coast. He recently shot a triple feature over a September weekend of CHVRCHES, Interpol, and Lykke Li at Oakland’s Fox Theater, and we are happy to share some of his pictures. Keep an eye out for future photo spreads from Sean. To check out some of additional work, visit his website here.

After nearly twenty years of creating music, inclusive of a four year hiatus, New York City’s Interpol has produced an astonishingly flat album: El Pintor. At best, El Pintor is pedestrian; at worst, it is banal, unimaginative, and something of a cop-out. Perhaps it was the hiatus (2009-2013) that threw the band off kilter. Quite possibly, they are losing their touch, or maybe, after gathering such an ardent fan-base for nearly two decades, they merely stopped trying. Reminiscent to a bad amalgam between The Strokes and R.E.M., it sounds promising. The ultimate result, however, lacks any novelty.

Upon first listening through the album, I initially had the impression that I had heard it somewhere before. This is, of course, because the album is indistinguishable from any other run-of-the-mill alternative rock album out there. In fact, what is probably most disheartening about El Pintor is not necessarily that it’s bad, but that it left me with no lasting impression whatsoever. Despite my optimism about giving it another listen, I was still unable to recall anything about the album except for its vague and unidentifiable nature.

Even their single, “All the Rage Back Home,” promises nothing more than a catchy chorus and some melancholy lyrics: “I keep falling, maybe half the time.” Although a valiant effort, “All the Rage Back Home” is the only song somewhat distinguishable from the others, and a glaringly obvious choice for a single: it is transparently contrived to appeal to the inattentive masses. The remaining songs almost seem to transcend the need for titles, as they merge together into something of a giant run-on sentence.

For fans that have followed Interpol from the glorious beginning, this album may not have left them as disillusioned as I was, because, after a four year hiatus, they’ll accept anything…right? However, as an objective listener, El Pintor merely goes through the motions, and I was going through the motions with it, resulting in a subdued and completely unextraordinary listening experience.

New York post-punk heavyweights, Interpol, have released a video for “All The Rage Back Home,” the first single off their first album in four years. Now a power trio after the departures of Carlos D and Brandon (Secret Machines) Curtis, Interpol has been gearing up to make a return with some shows in Europe in anticipation of the release of El Pintor in Septemeber, and this Paul Banks directed clip offers a glimpse of this retooled and stripped down edition of the band.
