Cut Copy @ Electric City

Australian synth-pop outfit Cut Copy bring their high energy new wave stylings to the Theatre District this Thursday. Since forming in the early 2000s, the band has has achieved vast critical acclaim since their breakout 2008 album, In Ghost Colours. Cut Copy is pure indie sleaze adjacent, with the band’s breakout hits “Lights and Music” and “Heats on Fire” nestling comfortably in any sweaty hipster basement dance party for the following decade. Fans of Duran Duran, Friendly Fires, or Hot Chip would be into this one. Record the Bills game and start it when you get home at 10:55pm. Get there early for an opening set from Ora the Molecule. Tickets are $43.99.

The FMs @ Milkies

Milkies is set to host another banger on Saturday with a tight local bill featuring indie scene mainstays Hundred Plus Club, freshly-back-from-a-national-national Orange Dog Club, and buzzing SUNY Fredonia project, Paper Tigers. The lineup also features a set from New York City synth-pop act, The FMs who are in the midst of a regional tour at the moment. The band formed back when high school friends Matte Namer and Frankie Rex officially created the project in 2016. The FMs stock steadily rose into the pandemic which was curtailed by the sudden passing of Rex. Namer has continued the legacy and vision of the act, steadfastly advancing the project’s trajectory and keeping with the theme of queer and transgender motifs in their songs. $10 cover.

Captain Tom & the Hooligans @ Molly Maguires

Buffalo’s #1 polka band under sixty years old will play a fun one at one of South Buffalo’s finest dive bars on Friday. If you aren’t familiar, Captain Tom & the Hooligans exploded onto the scene post-Covid, sharing the stage with both punk rock bands and old time Polish journeymen, gaining fans along the way with their re-imaginative spin on polka classics. They’ve hit the local market pretty heavily over the past couple of years and you may have encountered the band inadvertently on their circuit of community festivals, breweries and one-offs. If you’ve ever heard a band playing polka with some stank on it, it was likely Captain Tom & the Hooligans. No cover, just buy 5 White Claws.

Rubblebucket @ Electric City

Rubblebucket returns to Buffalo this Saturday, showcasing their set at the hottest new megaplex venue in town, Electric City. The Brooklyn-based art-pop act is touring in support of their Q4 2024 release, Year of the Banana. Composed of former Universtiy of Vermont graduates Annakalmia Traver and Alex Toth, the band has been making waves on the national indie scene for over fifteen years. If you’re a fan of Tune-Yards, Caroline Rose, or Sylvan Esso, then this one would be right up your alley. $29 gets you in the door.

Shep Treasure @ Milkies

Milkies has a bit of a Western NY ripper Saturday featuring some of the areas most buzzed about regional bands. Making their way from Rochester is Shep Treasure, the moniker of former Slumbers member Sabrina Nichols. Their sound has a pretty, dreamy slowcore vibe to it thats enchanting and ethereal.

Not to be overshadowed is Hal & Pals, a formerly Fredonia-based indie outfit that have re-dispersed throughout the state, but will be returning to Buffalo for a one-off. Lead by Halle Cook, Hal & Pals have a twangy Courtney Barnett tinge to their sound.

Rounding out the already impressive bill will be two very familiar faces to the local indie scene, moody mall-goths Hundred Plus Club and shoegaze extraordinaires Elemantra. It’s $10 and that’s a steal.

The Hundred Plus Boys are at it again. Fresh off a sweet streaming success in their previous single “Gobsmacked,” Buffalo’s post-punk outfit drops their follow-up “Get Away from Me Jack.” HPC’s has featured bright guitars and earworm hooks taking influence from the great acts of 2000s indie rock, but lately things have gotten darker. “Gobsmacked” started down a gothy-er path that’s continued with the rollout of “Get Away from Me Jack.”

On this single, frontman Zain Shirazi’s baritone vocals hide within a heavy bottom half featuring some pounding bass guitar and a drum section that flips between understated live playing and New Order in-your-face “Blue Monday”-styled drum machine, continuing the band’s experimentation with percussive elements. Shirazi’s brooding vocals menacing backing voices compound the feeling of being under a sinister spell, as Zain tries to resist:

“You want people to come to your show … / But I don’t want this love, unless…”

Moody, gloomy, and groovy, HPC doesn’t let the darker tones get in the way of catchy melodies and foot tapping sections throughout the track. The visuals for “Get Away from Me Jack” match the mood of the track, as a violent figure commits themselves to dark arts under the influence of something even darker. Support the dudes on Spotify and explore some of their recent tracks and excellent back catalog.

Hundred Plus Club recently released a freshened version of their first song ever (!), affectionately titled “4/19 (Demo).” Ostensibly a working title or the file’s original name, the group used a ten-year-old idea of the first music they ever wrote that could be considered a fully fleshed-out tune. The trio kept the original recording of the drum track, a tight, jazzy snare-forward beat from drummer Burak Spoth, while adding mysterious lyrics and spindly guitar from singer/guitarist Zain Shirazi. There’s something special about demos recorded in a “tin can basement,” and it’s a fun little development that HPC had the wherewithal to polish this into a proper release.

We’ve embedded a Spotify player below for convenience, but be sure to check out all the different ways to support HPC via this helpful Linktree link.

Hundred Plus Club combines intense, often dark, emotions with an upbeat indie rock style that perfectly mixes the negative and positive. It’s an easy-to-get-into sound applicable to life’s many uncertainties and in-betweens.

In their earlier discography, the group often drew inspiration from early 2000’s post-punk revival and indie rock groups such as The Strokes, Interpol, or MGMT. Check out our previous posts on the band to learn more.

Yet their most recent release, “Gobsmacked,” finds a bit more in common with 80’s alternative and post-punk groups like The Cure or Echo & the Bunnymen. Sticking to the shadows with an edgier sound, Hundred Plus Club evolves their style substantially on “Gobsmacked,” delving deep into a modern and groovy goth rock sound.

An 80’s drum machine loop acts as the rhythmic foundation, while lead singer Zain Shirazi’s open-ended lyrics jump off the page:

“I see those menacing eyes / I wanna buy a bird / But I can’t contain”

The song peaks at the melty chorus, where the bouncy drum part, grooving bass line, and Shirazi’s despondent vocals float about. Cold, hollow synth tones fuse the interlocking elements together into a sleek chorus. Towards the end, the group turns up the intensity with a driving bass line, raging guitar part and the song’s loudest use of live drums to make for an exciting, best-for-last finale.

Stream “Gobsmacked” on Spotify or Apple Music.

Los Angeles based Rain Gregorio brings us his latest single with “Foggy Stepper,” off of the pleasantly-named Anxiety Blanket Records. An indie rocker’s indie rocker, RG brings an intriguing deeply layered track with a healthy dose of bass and colorful synth shining through. It almost veers into a gothy post-punk feel with the downbeats and somber refrain “You’re better off” (plus the aforementioned layering). This sort of discordant sound is a progression from his last big release, the “Myrtle on Holiday” single, which gave similar vibes.

Oddly enough (and this is not a plug, but sort of is) this kind of reminded me of one of my favorite local bands, Hundred Plus Club, and the sound they’ve been embracing as of late (check them out too!)

Be sure to check out “Foggy Stepper” on Spotify, Apple Music, or the video down below pulled from YouTube.

tl;dr = Indie rock with a post punk aftertaste, layered guitar and synths, deeply introspective. Check it out below via YouTube.

Buffalo-based band Hundred Plus Club (HPC) stays on par with their poppy, story-driven music in their latest three-song EP, Doom and Bloom. The band teamed up with Admirable Traits Records yet again to record this project which joins the ranks alongside a number of excellent singles, EPs like 2016’s For You and 2017’s Everybody’s Friend, and a split with their fellow Buffalonians in Cooler.

The opening track and lead single “Garden Cruise” dives into the problems of love (in whatever form it may take) – within the first few lines lead singer Zain Shirazi exclaims, “Love makes, Love makes us cry.” He sings with such a cold and calculated pain that if you close your eyes and imagine yourself alone at night, you’d feel like you can run through a brick wall head on. Essentially, that is the picture that the band tends to draw for their fans; being able to encapsulate real life problems in the artistic form of music is what keeps HPC going, and with the open-mindedness of the band’s approach, they open a door for their fans to be let into.

The drums on the project, delivered by Burak Spoth and recorded by Jay Zubricky at GCR studios, are resonant and slappy in a way that inspires a deep inner warmth. Not to mention, the thrilling guitar riffs that sound like something you’d hear on a Smiths record. Keyboardist Zekeriya Spoth adds an incredible amount of depth and atmosphere to the EP, bringing a smart and organic approach to an otherwise electronic instrument. All of the tracks on this project are catchy, jumpy, and more than a little melodic, which is the perfect blend of elements for the band to capture.

With a line like, “I fell maybe too hard” in “Dew Drop,” the band continues their analysis of love in all its different embodiments. “Dew Drop” finds the band reigning in their intensity a bit and channeling new-era Strokes, playing around with a plinking keyboard part while Zain ponders about the intricacies of love. Listen closely and you’ll hear subtle snare rim hits, wood blocks, finger-twisting bass riffs, and even a trumpet solo – it’s clear the band has upped their songwriting approach here and are exploring new avenues for delivering their sound.

With the undermining vocals of the near seven-minute “White Dwarf,” HPC makes their fans feel okay to be alone. Through the chorus of the track, Zain says: “Dance with me, dance with me,” explaining that no matter what problems you’re having or going through, this band will be right there to guide your way through.

The tracks on the project are sad, happy, and dreamy, but also leave you feeling pumped-up. It’s like when you go to your favorite ice cream shop and order a milkshake with too many flavors… It may sound intense until you try it and then it’s everything you’ve ever wanted. While listening to the opening track “Garden Cruise,” I felt as though someone could punch me in the face and I would feel completely okay with still having a smile. “Nothing can possibly go wrong” is what you’ll tell yourself while listening to this project, enjoying the open-mindedness of the band’s approach while they execute that mantra perfectly.

The project was released on all platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp) on May 12, 2023. It was mixed and mastered Jonathan Wisniewski and Mike Fridmann and the cover art was created by the band themselves. Now take 14 minutes and 38 seconds out of your day to “calmly rage” with Hundred Plus Club as they take you through a sad but thrilling experience… We recommend starting with the self-produced “Garden Cruise” video via YouTube below.

Buffalo indie-alternative act Hundred Plus Club have teamed up with local label Admirable Traits Records again for a new(ish) music video/single. Beyond their catchy indie rock approach, the trio exude charisma and eloquence on camera quite effortlessly. In their latest music video for single, “Extraterrestrial Dread,” Hundred Plus Club take us on a journey with a galactic blue friend who presumably represents dread. Ironically enough, this goofy blue being is the only thing that brings a smile to the band’s faces throughout the entirety of the video. The overall tone of the song provides a calming essence that could be enjoyed in just about any mood, full of chiming guitars, subtle keys, and metronome rhythms.

Rochester based artful garage-pop act Boy Jr. headlines a deeply interesting indie bill tonight at Nietzsche’s. The brainchild of songwriter Erica Allen-Lubman treads the boundaries between angsty garage rock and full on glam pop. Lubman is also a captivating persona, and will definitely draw you into her performance. She’s really found her sound, which has definitely been refined through the years, and her last few singles “It’s Enough” and “Anyway” are definitely worth a listen.

Also on the bill are indie stalwarts Hundred Plus Club. With enveloping textures reminiscent of Interpol or The Last Shadow Puppets, HPC makes instantly infectious and memorable music. Definitely bring your dancing shoes. Rounding out the bill are lo-fi rockers Dogs in Stereo and local sad boys west ferry. This looks to be another promising bill, and will definitely help you shake off the winter blues. 9pm Doors, $7 cover, 21+ unless accompanied by a parent.
