Perfume Genius @ Electric City

Art-pop crooner Perfume Genius makes a stop Friday night for an undoubtedly gripping performance in the Theatre District. Perfume Genius is the performing name for Iowa native Mike Hadreas and his rotating cast of musicians who have been performing under the project name since 2008. The band has connected with their fans largely in part to Hadreas’ vulnerable lyrics and commanding story telling.

The band touring in support of their critically acclaimed album, Glory, which came out in the tail end of March. If you are a fan of Sufjan Stevens, Andy Shauf, or Arcade Fire, this is up your alley. It’s $45.28.

Saturday, june 14th @ 5pm

The Beaches @ Albright Knox Gallery

The AKG ups the ante after last spring’s Khruangbin performance as part of their Rockin’ the AKG series. This year, the gallery has teamed up with local public media broadcasters Buffalo Toronto Public Media to curate an evening of some of the most buzzed-about Canadian artists just over the border.

The Beaches have been regularly selling out tours and playing at the top of various music festivals over the past few years. The band’s accessible indie pop rock repertoire is full of sing-a-long tracks that are pure earworms. If you’re a fan of Wolf Alice, Royal Otis, or HAIM, The Beaches should already be on your radar.

Not to be overshadowed are support roles from Canadian indie scene veterans, The Trews, and a solo set from Menno Versteeg of the rock band Hollerado.

We were already pumped about this lineup, but there was a sneaky late addition on social media channels a few weeks back announcing that #1 Myspace songstress Lights would be joining the bill. How they managed to squeeze on one of the buzziest underground electro-pop acts of the aughts and 10s AND managed to keep it the same price is pure concert magic.

It’s a promising use of the space and we are excited to see partnership and opportunities moving forward into the fall. It’s $50 but if this was in Toronto it would be $1,900 CAD.

Grow Up Tomorrow by The Beaches

Tuesday, June 17th @ 7pm

Laura Jane Grace @ Electric City

Laura Jane Grace & band makes their annual summer stop in Western New York on Tuesday. Grace has been a constant in the punk and indie scene for nearly 30 years, notably as the lead musician for cult status punk band Against Me! The band has an intense following in part due to their strong political views, trans advocacy, and environmental activism.

Opening the night is queer Michigan bar rock outfit Rodeo Boys, who are signed to respected punk curators Don Giovanni Records. It’s $36.01.

It’s hard to say goodbye. Especially when it comes to leaving behind someone or something that’s been a part of us for years. It is with great sadness that Canadian indie rock act Hollerado announced earlier this year that they are hanging up their axes and calling it quits (hopefully only for a little while).

Forming in 2007, the band first pulled at our heartstrings with the driving riffs of “Americanarama” and the soaring chorus of “Juliette” and has been steadily been churning out hits ever since. But with this bad news comes some good: they announced they would release a new album and embark on a “one-last-hoorah” tour, and they have been coming through with their promises.

Hollerado released Retaliation Vacation in June this year to great reception, and have already embarked on their tour. The band will be in Buffalo tonight at Town Ballroom for what will be their last U.S. show before they head north of the border for a series of Canadian dates before they finally disband. So, if you’re like us and have been a fan ever since the early days, you’re not going to want to miss us. Tickets are still available via the Town Ballroom box office for $24. Doors open at 7pm.

Easter is still a few days away but talk about a basket of goodies: Hollerado and Wildlife will be at Town Ballroom this evening. We have a long way to go, but this lineup is a dark-horse contender for show of the year.

I mean to take nothing away from Hollerado because I enjoy each and every 90’s flashback they intentionally and unintentionally provide, but this is one of those rare shows where I’m just as excited to see the opening act. I love Hollerado’s unabashed party-rock spirit, and Record in a Bag has taken up multiple, lengthy residencies in my car stereo, but Wildlife’s On The Heart was one of my favorite albums of 2013. It made me miss the 80’s even though I am pretty sure I was still in diapers. In my fawning review of it last March, I suggested, rather cringe-worthily, that “Bad Dream” might have been how the universe was formed. It was an admittedly ambitious choice of words, but they are going to be a hell of an opener.

Regardless of which band you are going there to see, it’s going to be a good Friday. Doors are at 7:00 pm. Tickets are still available for $17 here.
