Buffalo trio, Green Slime, are back and in full effect with their new speaker blowing and truly excellent 10-track stoner garage rock album, 2.

Their sophomore full-length can best be described as the perfect combination of heaviness and melody. It’s the kind of songs Rivers Cuomo circa the Blue Album would have wrote had he snorted a mountain of coke and bit the head off a bat.

The wonderfully raw and crunchy garage grooves from guitarist Eric Ellman and bassist Mike Euscher are so thick they practically ooze from their amps. The two shred at their heaviest and doomiest on “Survival,” a boisterous track that will possess you to throw up your lighter while headbanging deeply and lethargically along.

Ellman also works double-duty as Green Slime’s lead singer with crooning vocals reminiscent of the ones you’d hear on a nostalgic 90’s alt-rock single. They’re an absolute blast to sing along to too, especially on the anthemic “No Care.”

Topping off and driving the raucous records are drummer Blake Ellman’s kick-ass and deafening drumbeats influenced by dancy punk rock.

Each track off 2 leads to full-body rocking out, but the standouts among the standouts are “Sundrown City,” “Breast Pocket,” and “Gold Circle.”

Don’t sleep on Green Slime’s latest and blast 2 below.

Get your culture on tonight at Sugar City as they host a righteous evening celebrating the creative expression of art, rock and roll.

Venturing all the way from Japan and continuing their extensive US tour are one-of-a-kind indie rockers, The Molice. This charming DIY three-piece play bright, bubbly and highly danceable power pop records that draw from a wide range of influences. If you haven’t heard their cover of The Police’s “Bring on the Night,” seek it out ASAP and find out what all the buzz is about. As a special treat, lead singer and guitarist, Rinko, will be showcasing a series of original paintings in the gallery to kick off the night. Stimulate your ears, eyes and mind with this ever-creative and rocking act.

Also taking the stage and bringing the noise are gnarly garage rockers and Buffalo scene vets, Green Slime. This brother duo specializes in raw, melodic grooves that lay rubber and practically ooze from the speakers. Their down and dirty sound features an awesome racket of drums and crunchy guitar riffs that rev like an engine so filthy it would make Scott Pruitt’s polluted heart flutter. Leave your earplugs at home for these guys; the tinnitus will be more than worth it.

Rounding out the night and getting all up in your beeswax are Buffalo’s own teeth-rotting, punk rockers, Gun Candy. Art at 6pm, music at 8p. Gallery is free, $7 for music.

Buffalo two piece, Green Slime construct an energetic throwback experience on their new EP, The Vesta Rose, a follow up to their self titled full-length LP from September. Blending together grunge, indie, and pop-punk, the duo consisting of brothers, Eric Ellman on guitars/vocals and Blake Ellman on drums, aim to recall a particular moment in rock history while also adding a bit of modernity.

Green Slime’s primary vein on this new EP is grunge, and it’s something the band is able to manipulate well. The tone of the guitar has a guttural quality to it that really captures that 90s grunge grit that became a staple of the genre. Especially here, that tone is needed, not only to evoke the genre, but in order to fill up all the sparseness that exists. As a two piece, the band consists only of a guitarist and a drummer. Unlike a group like The Black Keys, who fill up some of the sonic gaps with dynamic blues riffs or other bands that use different chorus pedal effects. The guitar here is basically doing double duty. On top of this framework sits rather melodic vocals that float between indie and pop-punk.

Tracks like “Ames 45” show off Green Slime’s songwriting chops best, consisting of some mosh inducing rhythmic drum cymbal crashes that are pushed along by the guitar work which is happy to stay consistent, not wanting to disrupt the groove by way of going into an extended solo. Think what a band like Kyuss did with their guitar, blending it into the bass rhythm. Track “Hovering Eye” is another stand out, that ends in a breakdown reminiscent of an Electric Wizard dirge. These particular moments, where the band moves away from only being a grunge/indie band, are short lived on the EP, but the hints we get show what the two piece is capable of.

Green Slime make good use of the various elements that influence the members to create a nice sounding, driving record. There are times where things are possibly too much on the nose, like the cover of L7’s “Pretend We’re Dead.” Like any successful cover, it’s beat for beat like the original. Which certainly isn’t something to disdain, although the band could go to lengths beyond to make the cover stand out as a piece of music unique to them, something they can take ownership of.

Physical copies of the album will be available through RubyDisc and you can listen to the EP in its entirety through Green Slime’s bandcamp page.

Green Slime is a Buffalo duo making an incredible amount of noise. Have you ever heard the acronym KISS? It stands for “keep it simple stupid.” Green Slime is a duo (Eric and Blake Ellman to be exact) who have obviously taken that advice to heart. The brothers Ellman spent a few days with Jay Zubricky at GCR this past September. They left with a self-titled, twelve-song banger, full of sludgy nuggets of succinct indie rock. They’ve taken the best elements of Queens of the Stone Age, The Black Angels, and Superchunk and condensed it into a bunch of garage punk bangers.

Album opener “Not Sorry” is the archetypal Green Slime song. Get used to the gigantic heavy guitars, bombastic drums, and Eric Ellman’s slightly-effected vocals, because Green Slime doesn’t need much else to get their point across. Don’t be fooled by the heavy chugging, Green Slime has a penchant for pop songwriting. “Not Sorry’s” chorus, “I’m not sorry now,” is one of the catchiest moments on the album.

Song two is “Love Forever,” a groovy, stoner-rock tune that highlights the duo’s Kyuss side. This jam and “Not Sorry” certainly belong on the same album, though “Love Forever” shows a different use of the duo’s talents. Eric has channeled the typically unruly fuzz on his guitar into something unstoppable. Blake pounds effortlessly away behind him. “Love Forever” best demonstrates their ability to write self-propelling jams that sound as if they were effortless. More than likely, Green Slime but was probably painstakingly and carefully crafted.

One of my personal favorites on Green Slime is “Dog Song,” a sunny indie rock jam reminiscent of fellow Buffalo rockers Failures’ Union (after writing this sentence, I would later learn that Eric is the guitarist of Failures’ Union). Some other unique moments on this album come from “Purple Jansport” which sports a delay-laden intro that smarts of “Faeries Wear Boots” by Black Sabbath. “Matamoros” is the sludgiest waltz I’ve ever heard, boasting a time-signature change mid song. Album closer “Lights Out” is a five-minute jam that stomps along at a crawling pace. All I’m saying is, while these guys have the unbridled fuzzrock down to a science, they aren’t a one-trick-pony.

Best of all, Green Slime is currently offered on Bandcamp for a “Name Your Price” rate. Be sure to check Green Slime out at their first show on November 4th.
