The Eastside of Buffalo continues to produce some of the most compelling artists in the 716. One of our favorite new acts is rapper Roy Flush, who brings a street sensibility to each of his bars. “Buggin’ Out” is one of his recent highlights.

It’s a great track to explore Roy’s mindset and his experiences, as each line drips with authenticity. Verses describe his connections within the prison system, intimidation with a purpose and the gravitational pull of the streets. A voice representing a conscious asks Roy on the hook about his behavior, and his poignant response is essentially that it’s just the way things have to be. Roy’s anchored on the beat by a melancholic soul sample that really grounds Roy’s street diary. Its sweetness counters Roy’s aggressiveness and creates a perfectly well-rounded sonic experience. Give it a spin below.

Check out Roy’s latest run of singles on Spotify. While you’re there, scope out our hip hop playlist, where we’ve been saving some of our favorite rising acts of late.

Buffalo’s very own Mark the Aquarius is back on the scene with “SEV ONE SIX” – a timely anthemic single for the city as we rebound from a particularly disappointing end of season.

Filled with swagger, Mark’s venomously delivers himself and the city as the “Us” in an “Us Against the World” conflict. His intense wordplay is the strength of the track, dropping fervent city, wrestling, and Sway references in the same breath. “SEV ONE SIX” features bombastic production – giant MOP-style horns and swirling strings, matching and elevating the intensity.

The “SEV ONE SIX” music video features vintage Buffalo scenes intermixed with Mark’s local performances – check it out for a nice nostalgic experience.

Somewhere in the up & coming hip/hop scene in Buffalo, a voice can be heard with sounds of clarity – it comes from Motiks on his latest single, “House Of Mirrors.” The track starts out with Motiks speaking to his fans in the form of placing yourself in a haunted house and hearing somebody talk to you through the speakers but you don’t actually know where they are. The voice effect that resembles this sound is a very good technique for Motiks to grab his fans’ attention right away when they first listen to the track as he says, “I would like to welcome you to the house of mirrors, what you see might not be what you were expecting, we worked hard to get you here…” Telling his fans that he’s grown within his music capabilities and they’re not ready for what’s next to come from the young talented rapper.

The track makes you want to jump up and down uncontrollably, as Motiks shares his perspective on rap along with the self confidence in his abilities that make his fans want to go out and do anything they feel they might not be able to do. Putting a message like that within a rap song is a powerful move; it’s almost as if Motiks were gathering all of his supporters in one place and telling them, “This is what I do, this is what you do, and together we can all rule the world.” As you reach the minute point of the track, Motiks speaks on that a little bit as he says, “And I’ve been rapping, I’m giving lessons, it’s hard to teach someone something like this.” You can visualize a video in your head of him being a teacher seeking to teach a motivated lesson to his supporters.

The different flows that the young rapper uses on this track are remarkable as sometimes he raps a little slower and other times he’s rapping with a bit more intensity. Not only does this show the talent of Motiks, it also showcases the versatility that he is capable of contextually within his songs. One of my favorite elements of the track is the lyricism between the hook and the verses – sometimes you hear rappers be a little sincere within their songs or they are just rapping a bunch of facts at you to connect with their fans… Motiks takes the second route on that one, as he tells a story saying if there’s a time to be a fan of his, it’s right now.

The young rapper draws inspiration from the late Mac Miller along with Chinx and Styles P which you can hear a little bit within his own tracks. At the start of the second verse, Motiks explains how he can’t see the signs that other people are giving to him to further his career, maybe even by the ones he’s most closest with as he says, “trusting the ones that you think can be trusted, now they are the reason that you getting busted” This is another powerful message as he’s telling his fans no matter what people tell you good or bad, you just have to smile and push forward and eventually you’ll be in the spot people once told you that you couldn’t be in.

The track was released back on April 20th, the beat of the track was produced by one of Motiks friends by the name of Glen Cove and the track was recorded, mixed, and mastered all by the talented rapper himself Motiks in his home studio. If two minutes and 16 seconds of relatable career chaos within an outstanding rap track sounds appealing to you, then you’re going to love the young rapper’s latest hit.

You can find the track on all streaming platforms along with following along the young rapper’s musical journey on his Instagram page. Be on the lookout for upcoming Motiks shows around Buffalo as well.

Hunger Artist and Covito, two of Buffalo hip hop’s most versatile producers have teamed up to keep the city’s current cultural dominance in the forefront with international beats and vibes under the code name Prímera División, and El Sonido de Prímera División is their debut manifesto. Projected through the prism of the global obsession that is football (soccer) and the gritty and hazy ear candy that’s an essential component of Buffalo’s Hip Hop sound, the remixes and sonic collages of El Sonido de Prímera División showcase the inescapable fact that the Queen City’s hip hop scene is the spiritual and aesthetic inheritors of all things East Coast.

Following in the footsteps of sonic pioneers like The Bomb Squad, DJ Premier, and The RZA, Primera Division creates intricate Walls of Sound for each cut to get all the way in your ears, with layers of esoteric samples and psychedelic frequencies designed specifically to tickle your brain. The expertly curated guest list, featuring such luminaries as Pusha T, Joey Badass, Grizelda’s Westside Gunn, and the late Nipsey Hussle and MF DOOM, is extremely well served by Essential Vitamins Crew and Rebel Radio alum Covito (aka J. Vazquez) and underground beatmaker Hunger Artist (aka D. Fisk), whose custom beats and grooves showcase each emcee to their fullest while keeping the spotlight and the duo’s very Buffalo sounds.

Listening to Prímera División’s remixes of local hero Westside Gunn and fallen legend MF Doom’s “2 Strings” or Hail Mary Mallon’s “whales,” with their hyper crisp cymbal crashes, vintage cartoon strings samples, and elegant grittiness, one can’t help but come to the realization that indeed it’s an amazing time to be alive with Buffalo seemingly being the current center of the real hip hop universe. It’s real and it’s happening, and with producers and beat gurus like Prímera División’s Hunger Artist and Covito, Buffalo just might hold onto the title for a while.

Right in time for the most catawampus Fourth of July in American history probably since the original and our ongoing Coronavirus summer, Buffalo’s hip hop scene delivered not one but two vital albums for our long, hot summer, Westside Gunn’s latest, which we’ll leave to Pitchfork now that the Grizelda crew has gone supernova; and Planet 9, a gloriously shiny and irresistible collaboration featuring emcees way2wavybaby and Chango4 that’s chilled out yet laser sharp, and a very encouraging glimpse of the future. If it feels like the ground is moving beneath our feet that’s because it is, and way2wavybaby and Chango4 are part of this seismic shift.

You love to see it: artists explicitly breaking down the exclusionary and oppressive limitations of old paradigms to get and be free, and the aspirational, DGAF lyrics and hypnotic grooves of Planet 9 feels like a welcome manifestation of this phenomena. Gen Z emcees like way2wavybaby and Chango4 aren’t prophets of rage but they are the prophets of our present and the future they’re trying to create, and it’s truly beautiful to behold.

A member of 14 Trapdoors, Moscato is a scene mainstay relentless with his releases. His latest drop in his prolific output is a 10-track instrumental project with a familiar ambient feel. Album opener “Reincarnation” is build around Kid Cudi’s moans from Kids See Ghost’s “Reborn,” accentuated with some head nodding bass drum. Moscato again flips a recognizable loop of Grimes’ iconic “Genesis” with a mesmerizing boom boom clap. Other highlights include the cinematic ambient soundscape of “redhead gurl” and the bright keys of aptly titled “weed beat.”

Buffalo hip hop producer Cee Gee (Columbus Green) connects with a who’s who of rhymesayers from 716 and beyond for his latest release, album Classical Gifted. The noted cratedigger dug deep into his bag for creative samples and molded it all into sonic undertones ranging from elegant to gritty depending on each track’s vision, creating a uniquely Western NY experience.

Classical Gifted succeeds in being a traditional NY hip hop album, with menacing beats built for cyphers and freestyles. Packed with references to Western NY elements including Spectrum news, garbage plates, the Great Lakes and more, Cee Gee’s constructed a showcase of what hip hop can sound like in our region. His production rides the influence of sample-flipping legends like Madlib and Havoc of Mobb Deep, Gee’s beats are understated at times but steadfast in their deliberation.

Cee Gee‘s production project is aided by ‘stories,’ the vocal contributions headlined by some of Buffalo’s best lyricists. Prior to Classical Gifted, Gee grabbed producer credits on Buffalo hip hop supernova Westside Gunn’s “Broadway Joe’s.” A different rap act assists on nearly each one of the release’s 21 tracks, including familiar faces in noted storyteller Frigid Giant (“Black Lodge”), charismatic collaborators Ooze Gang (“Another Definition”), Rochester’s mic snatchers BnA and Crotona P (“Classical Gifted Remix”) and much more. Cee Gee’s beats have the same luster when they’re the star of the show in the instrumental tracks “The Needle Still Drops,” “Neon Icon” and “May 20.”

“Longevity,” the project’s second to last track, ties these themes all together with the aid of Mad Dukez’ narration shouting out the success of Buffalo hip hop. Classical Gifted is a celebration – ride around the city with it as your background.

Buffalo hip hop punk crew Rap & Destroy follow up their debut singe “R Kelly’s heel” with an even clearer declaration of intent and sonic manifesto in the form of their latest cut, “Act Like UGAF.” A spicy sneak preview of their forthcoming debut LP R.A.D AdVICE due next week, “Act Like UGAF” is raw, insurgent, and solid for turning things up at the party thanks to it’s powerful collective presence and thoroughly blunted 90’s hip hop sound.
