“Aye Karou is an energetic 5 piece rock band from South Buffalo, NY. Its members include Mark Barrett (bass guitar/vocals), Ray Fulton (guitar/vocals), Brian Battenfeld (drums/percussion), and Bill Fulton (guitar/vocals). They began playing together in the summer of 2007 as The Tragically Sith, a cover band playing songs by The Tragically Hip but altering the lyrics to be all about the Star Wars films. A decision to begin playing original music drove the group to form Aye Karou in early 2010. The goal of the band became to share their music with as many people as possible and have the absolute best time ever doing it. Influences include My Morning Jacket, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Weezer, Pavement and Built to Spill.” – Aye Karou

Saturday, December 21st @ 7:30pm

buffaBLOG Holiday Party @ Milkies

Well, we’re back. These past few months we have been increasing our content load and getting back on the saddle to provide our normal churn of quality local and regional bands for your listening pleasure. With that, we wanted to re-establish some of our defunct annual traditions, which include our heavily attended annual Holiday Party.

Previously, we hosted this event annually at DBGB’s, however with the closure of the establishment, we had to find a new home for the showcase and we are happy to now collaborate with Milkies for this upcoming event. If you haven’t wandered to that section of Elmwood over the past couple years, the lounge underwent a giant revamp of their menu, branding, and interior since 2023 when the general manager Nikki Rosenberg took the realm.

Our past holiday parties have featured performances by JOYWAVE, Humble Braggers, Newish Star, RADARADA, The Slums, Del Paxton, The Slums, JOHNS, and many more. Our aim for these parties is to showcase a local line-up that we know will be a banger and if you had to go to one-show a year to re-acquaint yourself with the local scene, you will know these acts are rippers.

This year we will be featuring indiemo quartet Cooler, 2000s South Buffalo indie rockers Aye Karou, 90’s college rockers Eugene Palmer, and electo-pop solo act Matches Laces (aka Mike Santillo from the Tins). Doors will be at 7:30pm and there will be a $12 cover. Don’t worry, it’s 2024 and Milkies now takes Venmo payments. Ho ho ho Happy Holidays.

Friday, December 20th @ 8:30pm

Orange Dog Club @ Milkies

Orange Dog Club is back to their frequent local watering hole for a night of up-and-coming local indie bands on the Elmwood Strip. The band has broken out beyond Buffalo on the Spotify algorithms, due to the catchy upbeat energy from the band and thir garage-rock comparisons to The Strokes, The Hives or Jet. Joining the showcase will be the ever-busy Prairie Pavement, hazy indiepop act The Rainlamps, and noisy punk band Wax. $10 gets you a front row seat to the action.

Monday, December 23rd @ 7pm

The CPXMAS @ Jack Rabbit

Longtime local scene vet, Andrew J. Reimers returns with his country punk outfit, The CPX (Country Punk Xtravaganza) for their annual yuletide rager, aptly titled The CPXMas. Usually taking place at Mohawk Place, the annual tradition found a new home at the cozy Jack Rabbit for a night of holiday songs and numbers from the band’s vast repertoire. Joining them will be fellow scene staples Aircraft and high energy alt-rock act Snakeland. Grab tickets in advance for a very fair $6.49 advanced, or $12.68 day-of.

Without a doubt, party-punk act Diarrhea Planet is one of the most talked about bands rising in the ranks of the blogosphere. Another consensus is the off-putting band name, which some dismiss before giving them an actual listen. I, for one, think the band name sounds like a writer for a failed 90’s teen comedy came up with fictional grunge band playing a high school prom. “Like… Diarrhea Planet are totally playing prom. Duh.”

The band’s sound is big, almost like if you took the good parts of Weezer, with the energy of Andrew W.K, and Nashville-style of labelmates Jeff the Brotherhood. To boot, Diarrhea Planet’s live show is incredibly engaging. This past month, I caught them in Brooklyn’s soon-to-be-closed DIY space Death By Audio, where I witnessed the sextet crunch itself onto a tiny stage, pump out jammers to a sweaty, constantly crowd surfing audience intent on pulling down the drop ceiling meanwhile wishing numerous band-friends “Happy Birthdays.” It seems like there will only be one other band on the bill at press time, South Buffalo’s Pavementy-Dinosaur Jry Aye Karou. I’m really encouraging you guys to head out to this, as it may be one of the best live shows coming to Buffalo in 2014. 8pm doors with a $12 cover.
