Tonight Mohawk hosts a solid lineup of Buffalo indie rock when Johnny & The Man Kids celebrate the release of their new EP You Made Me Hurt with help from Passed Out, Award Show and Halo Nellie. People expecting some 90’s revivalism will have to look elsewhere because Johnny & the Man Kids have entirely skipped that apparently misbegotten decade to embrace the glory of the first decade of the 21st century as embodied by NYC stalwarts The Strokes and Vampire Weekend with some of that early Killers goodness (before it all went wrong) via John Marciniak’s earnest and appealingly evocative vocals, and their EP is a celebration of youth and an era that almost seems bygone nowadays considering everything’s all went wrong, but hey.

Opening the show will be raw as hell indie rockers Passed Out, lo-fi shoegazers Award Show, and newbies halo nellie, about which little is known so there’s even an element of mystery in play tonight at the Mohawk, which is always nice. The cover is $8, which includes a physical copy of You Made Me Hurt, and doors are at 8pm.

Philly’s indie rock sweethearts Past Life breeze through Buffalo tonight with a stacked lineup at Sugar City. The four-piece is currently riding the wave of their recently released EP The Loudest Sound, featuring their stalwart single “Apollo” at the forefront. Banding together in the city of brotherly love, Past Life’s music has a connectivity that boasts of childhood camaraderie and intuition, even with just two years as a band under their belt. Meeting wispy falsetto with bleary distortion and spirited group vocals, these headliners promise a kinetic show saturated in guitar rock and sweat.

Past Lives are joined on tour with Montreal’s Molly Drag, whose dismal crooning takes a page out of the Teen Suicide-Dandelion Hands book. Michael Hansford’s dusky melodies and morose lyricism provide a form of catharsis that gradually lulls you into introspection, which will likely be found on his upcoming album Thumper, out this September.

The two acts are joined by local grunge rockers Velvet Bethany and lo-fi enthusiasts Award Show and Ex-Pat. Tickets are $5 with doors opening at 7pm. Sounds like a great way to spend your Thursday night.

Looking for something fun to do with your Tuesday? Head down to Sewing Souls for a night packed with some sweet tunes. Two acts from New York City are making the long trek to Buffalo, Lina Tullgren and Kateboard. Lina Tullgren recently released an LP, titled Won, on NYC label Captured Tracks before the end of last year, which sounds both haunting and complex. Kateboard utilizes a unique DIY sounding lo-fi approach, and has one full length tape under their belt from back in 2014. The rest of the bill is stacked with three local acts. Jesse Kaufman will be doing an acoustic solo set, Heave will be making their debut as a four piece, and slow core duo Award Show will be closing things out.

Doors open for the gig at 7pm, and there’s a $5 suggested donation for the touring band. Feel free to BYOB if you’re over 21, but don’t bring glass containers. To get to the space, head to the corner of Trinity and South Elmwood Ave and enter through the gate on Trinity next to the building. Be nice! More info is available on the facebook event.

Matthew Danger Lippman returns to his hometown with some swagger headlining a seriously tight lineup tonight at the Mohawk. The former Brimstone Blondes frontman, current New Yorker, and eternal art rock spaceman is passing through on his way home to an undisclosed location in the Five Boroughs and will be playing selections from his tripped out but supremely soulful Refresh 2 Death EP. Opening the show will be The Get Money Squad’s Quinton Brock featuring Feverbox, slowcore mind shredders Award Show, and up and coming local indie darlings Johnny and the Man Kids, all for the tidy sum of $8. Doors open at 7pm.

Wild Pink’s recent self-titled full length (out via Tiny Engines) is a slow burner. Though the instrumentation is warm, sincere and steady, It’s the poignant details in the lyrics that catch you by the collar and force you to press your ear into singer John Ross’ earnest murmur a bit more.

For as sleepy as the record sounds, it includes incredibly romantic and energized images of mundanity, loneliness, freedoms of youth versus the constraint and perplexity faced as an adult. It is a sprawling soundscape that seeps in like watercolor.

Catch Wild Pink along with Candy Ambulance, Award Show and Space Is Haunted at Sewing Soul Studios. Show at 8pm. $5 for the touring bands.

If you’re looking for something to do this Monday night, Sugar City has you covered. Brooklyn act, Palberta, will be rolling through Buffalo tonight, with some support from some great local acts. Palberta is hot off some good press from Rolling Stone, and while I could attempt to explain their bizarre style of music, I think you’re just better off going to the show to see for yourself.

Kicking off the show will be three local acts, Award Show, Slow Mutants, and dildoN’t. Sugar City is a drug and alcohol free space located at 1239 Niagara Street. The show is only six bucks and kicks off at 7pm.

Tonight Buffalo’s Leones celebrate the release of their Halloween album Ghost In The City at the Mohawk with Twin Speak, Orations, and Award Show. Bold and ambitious, Ghost In The City features excellent atmosphere, vocals reminiscent of Richard Ashcroft, and some serious class. Utica psychedelic doom rockers Twin Speak will opening the show with Buffalo goth romantics Orations, Award Show, a lo-fi acoustic bedroom folk project from Jesse Kaufman and Nate Ward, and 80’s horror movies on VHS in between sets.
